Whew! I think I'm going to melt over the next few days. High temps and low humidity. Makes for hard riding. Keeping hydrated is tough. You don't really know how much you are sweating as it evaporates before if forms on your skin. The good thing is you can get some evaporative cooling with plain water (I'll ride thought folks sprinklers when I get a chance 😉 )I think I'm going to re-arrange my work/riding schedule to try to get more early AM rides. Friday is my flex day so Friday-Sunday shouldn't be a problem. Today I'm going to have to sweat it out. My reward is a couple of frozen whole fruit bars when I get home!!
It's been over 100 here for the past few weeks. i start most of my rides at 5:30 am. the humidity should be in the single digits so it wont feel so bad till the moonsoons come ,wich have not got here yet. only good thing about the heat is i own a Air Cond Co. so it's a good thing 🙂
We're getting Hurricane Andrew's leftovers this week. Rain is predicted through the 20th! At least it's cooled things off a bit. Going to be using the trainer while watching the Tour DAY France I suppose.
Anyone notice while it's excruciatingly hot that the heart rates are >10 BPM higher for a given perceived effort? The heavier the person the more exaggerated this would be I imagine.
Brutal here in LV at the moment. If I don't get out by 5:30am, I don't go. Lots of H2O and electrolyte tabs.
Yeah, I don't know how you folks south of us (AZ, NV, NM) do it! I think Vegas is hot in October.... 🙂
I'm going to talk to my boss about re-aranging my work scheudule to come in later (to get in some early rides). You've got to admit, nothing feels a good in dry air as dumping a bottle of water in your head 😉

Dr.M.,
I'm built pretty well to shed heat (read skinny), but one problem I think I face with regards to riders bigger than me is the total amount of fluids in my body and precentage of body weight lost. I can notice a real loss of power when I start to get dehydrated (as I've noted in some other threads). I lost 5+ pounds Sunday. I really have to watch my fluid loss. When this happens my HR increases but speed decreases. I won't even talk about the warm desert winds that make this even worse. Maybe I should do a canyon ride or two to beat the heat.....
You guys think you have it bad! I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. The weather here has been 95 - 100 and 40 - 50% humidity. Breathing when you are working hard on your bike is draining, not to mention how fast the dehydration that sets in. Early morning rides are best but it is still 65 degrees and humid at 6 o"clock
I live in philly where its been 85-90 degrees F and 50-75% humidity. It makes it hard for a newbie to riding to stick with it. I've opted to go out around 6-7pm. I'm learning to live with the sweat, but am hving a hard time dealing with dehydration. Can't get enough water. Someone suggested salt water solution in orange or 100% grape juice. Any thoughts?

Oh man. You really need to watch that. That sounds nothing short of dangerous.

How do you folks "beat the heat"?
I've actually brought the bike back inside and put it back in the trainer. It's not hot in Indianapolis this week because of the hurrican spillover but I wanted to ba able to workout while watching the Toure DAY France. I can't really push it when it gets real not. 85 seems to be about my limit. If I do it'll be for 30 minutes but not 2 hours. That keeps me from overdoing it and getting too dehydrated.

That was after drinking at least 2 quarts on my ride. I didn't really feel "bad" until the last 2-3 miles (of 50). In the summer I generally loose 2-3 lbs in an hour ride. I always weigh myself before and after so I know how much fluid to drink to bring me back to "normal"...
Well I can't complain about the heat here in Sydney at the moment as it's the middle of Winter with day temps in the low 20s (centegrade) and just perfect for riding.
In summer, I tend to ride early in the mornings when it's going to be hot on the weekends and this has the added advantage of reduced traffic. During the week I tend to ride in the early evenings after the heat has lessened a bit but it is still light till about 8:00pm. Sometimes though I just get caught riding in 30+ C deg heat and I drink plenty of fluids (including a sports drink salts) and not try and overdo it. I sweat a lot and the airflow helps keep me cool enough. I'd much rather ride in heat than freezing cold especially if it's windy and/or raining.
Well I rearranged my work schedule to come in later. Got an early A.M. ride and what a difference.

BTW, I felt REALLY strong today. I ALMOST caught a big group of guys after they had a big (over 1 kM gap on me). I knew the distance because I was doing an out and back and was fairly close to my turn around point. I closed it down to within 100M over about 5-6 kMThey only reason I didn't get them is I got caught by a light and they didn't. When I passed the on the way out I thought there was no way I'd reel them in. I was only at 80-85% of max HR chasing. I think I was in excess of 40kM/h chasing. I was coming off 2 days rest...
The reason I posted this is it was about 70-75 Deg F (21-24 Deg C) on my ride. Depending on how things go these next few weeks, I might chalk up my mid-season "slump" to the weather....

Personally, I stick with plain water, supplemented with 2-3 electrolyte tablets per hour. I use Hammer's Endurolyte. I can take enough tablets in a small container for 100+ miles. I don't like to drink sweet liquids because it makes my mouth feel dry even immediately after taking a drink. But, I'd like to get a better tablet dispenser, something along the lines of the old Pez candy dispenser -- just flick a button and pop one in my mouth even at full speed.
