  1. Over the past year or two on this group we've have numerous discussions about swimming, alot
conerning technique versus brute workout. As with most groups on the internet very little has been
done with these arguments. After a not so unusual pool session and idea struck me. Why couldn't
rec.sport.swimming conduct the largest all inclusive pool study to date? This is the interenet and
being such we do have communcation tools avaialable that simply weren't available until recent
years. Seems to me that a study with a broad level of people with two different approaches, one
technique oriented the other more "work" oriented could be beneficial. What I had in mind was the
two, three or even four camps come up with specs to be taken prior to the test period. Things like,
height weight, gender etc would seem to be obvious factors. Other data such as speed in the
50,100,200,400,1500? I'm sure Larry would like to see, Kicking speed in the above. Terry might want
to know SC in the above. What I'm proposing is a study that involves some of the coaches/swimmers
that believe in the different styles of swimming colaberating and guiding our very own
Rec.Sport.Swimming -Swimmers to become better swimmers via there methodolgy. Over a period of time
these coaches/swimmers would make reccommendations to the swimmers of there group on the proper
direction to go. After the study all of the data could be compiled and compared. Although highly
simplified as stated above, I believe potential possible if compiled properly. Granted this study
would not be of a "scientific" grade, but I believe not only would it allow for a generic comparison
between the results, but it would be a lot fo fun too.

  2. so you're proposing that the swimmers within the group volunteer to be 'coached' a certain way, and
see which methodology leads to the best improvement?

Something to that effect. For instance we recently went thru the SL vs SR thing and Larry is
of the opionion that this is directly related to ones "kicking" prowess. If a R.S.S. Swimmer
is like minded then they'd join up with Larry's camp. OTOH say someone like Terry would say
that SL is far more important than the influence of the kick. If another swimmer agreed
they'd join up with Terry's camp. Of course the first order of business would be to decide
what defines the different camp(s). I suspect that keeping the number of camps as small as
possible would be easiest but having more may put out a few more fires/debates. The next
step would to be recruiting for the different camps, then testing based on agreed upon
"factors" then the experiment begins. Again far from labratory grade scientific, however
with a large enough population we may or may not see a difference. I suspect that we don't
have enough willing "giuniee<SP> pigs" in R.S.S. but who says they all have to be from here.
Anyone with web access could partake. On the benefit side for the subjects we potentially
would get proffesional/semiproffesional input or guidence. On the benefit for the
proffesionals they would have access to alot of people to try "new" methods on and in the
case of someone like Terry who does this for a living alot of press/exposure. For swimming
as a whole potentially we can draw some conclusions on swimming methodolgy. Potentially for
everyone involved, some good discussion and alot of fun!

    Hi Matt,

I think this is a wonderful idea and would like to participate as a swimmer and even a camp
    coordinator.

  5. Or...
We could have a swimming coach/teaching competition. Something in
the line of those "which kung-fu school is better?". 🙂 To be
scientific, we would do something like:

    1) each coach competing would be assigned (say) 10 randon persons with different swimming
skills, for instance body builders, tall slim swimmers, unfit persons... Complete random,
but it would be important to have "dificult cases." Thus avoiding that natural selection
would dispirit naturally slow swimmers. The benefits of technique over natural talent are
shown on how well/fast/steady a swimming chalenged person can swim putting some dedication.
    2) they would have a year to train, practicing 1 hour a day
    3) i would love to see timing in the far ranges of 1500m and in the 50m for each swimmer, no
    specialists here!

    - Winning coach would be
    - least accumulated time of all swimmers. So that it is the *training* that would be competing,
not who have the most natural talented swimmer
    - best timing improvement,
    - Group time would be the time of the slowest swimmer to complete.
    - pace consistency/steadiness
    - least amount of dropouts, injuries
    - etc ????

    Just some fast ideas. Nelson

  6. I'm game, Matt. I'm looking forward to being the exception that proves
the rule. Strong kick, big turnover: that's me.

I'm not sure I like the "least accumulated time of all swimmers" - even if the participants are
random. I would like to see percentage of increase and percentage of increase VS time commitment,
percent of goal obtained (where the goal is set by the participant), hours taken to reach goal and
total distance swum to reach goal.

A year would probably give you the best feedback, but I would like to see monthly and quarterly
progress. I think the toughest part will be commitment from participants followed by sticking to
    plan by the group coach.

We have ALOT of problems with the idea but IMO not insurmountable. A few problems I see.

    1) some people, particularly beginners will progress faster on a time invested vs increase
in speed ratio. I had thought that we break people into groups of Non-
swimmer/Beginer/intermediate/advanced. I suspect that the "non swimmer" catagory may be
    a bit much.
    2) People simply can't/won't follow the same workout or suggested workout. Some sort of time
    invested normalization must take place.
    3) Who's going to do the coaching? I'd think/Hope Larry might jump on this for his stuff,
but not sure about others Like Terry. Maybe we could find some other TI'ish guru's
willing to help out. Any Takers. I also think a web site would be benificial for setting
up alot of this stuff. Posting results, Test results, maybe places to post videos for
coaching suggestions. Again just a few more thoughts.
