  1. This weekend I set off to do the Glyder Traverse - from
Bethesda Slate Quarry and ending up in Capel Curig.
While I've done the Glyders a lot I've not done the
    whole route before.

'Ridges of Snowdonia' talks about reaching the beginnings of
the ridge via. A quarry road - indeed the new
Collins/Ramblers guide finishes their reverse direction
    traverse using the same road.

I found that this route was - seemingly - not accessible
from the quarry which meant a rather steep and tedious climb
up from the track that runs from Bethesda to Ogwen.

I can't see an easier alternative at the moment. Is this
route now not available or am I missing something?

I last did a linear route of this sort around six months ago
and don't recall any particular problems. The quarry road we
used runs from near Ogwen Bank (SH 626 654), where there is
limited parking on the A5, and allows you to veer off left
at a suitable point (SH 623 646 approx? I could be wrong on
this.) to pick up the steep ridge leading to Carnedd y
Filiast. The quarry road is marked clearly on a recent
1:50,000 map but not on my more battered 1:25,000 OL map.

As I recall it the point of departure from the quarry road
was cairned and the upwards route fairly obvious (signs of
previous passage), if a bit messy in places. Once on the
ridge there isn't much chance of losing the way. In descent
    I recall it being straightforward.

As the quarry road is not marked as a right of way, and
since the quarry is active, I'm not sure about using it
during the week. Maybe someone else knows more?

Having done the traverse in both directions I have to say I
prefer starting at Capel Curig, mainly because some of the
very soggy ground you are liable to find at the Capel end is
tempered by the prospect of better going over the main parts
    of the Glyders.

I'm pretty sure that this route wasn't open on the day that
I was there - at any rate there seemed no access to it.

Well I would agree but I was suffering from the Sherpa bus
service, having gone up to Wales on the train. I was there
over three Sunday/bank holiday days when the bus service was
atrocious, Indeed, on a couple of occassions I had to walk
back from Ogwyn to Capel Curig and on the Daffyd and
Llewellyn ridge walk I had to walk there and back. As it
happens the weather was fine and it wasn't too much of a
chore. But I can see why there is so much scepticism about
the new Green Key scheme for Snowdonia. There is too much
traffic about but they will have to spend a hell of a lot
    more on bus access.

The local business people in the area were dead against it.

If you visited shops in B-Y-Coed you would have seen the
    petitions deploring the scheme.

Stupid idea, traffic congestion is not a problem, they
should give in and build more car parks at Pen-y-Gwryd, Nant
Gwynant, Rhyd Ddu and Llanberis (already loads in Ogwen).
They're going to have to build them anyway. It'll do the
local tourist industry wonders and bring in income for the
    flailing sheep farming community.

That wasn't a troll by the way.

More traffic now they've blocked all the parking off in
    Llanberis Pass.

    :-(

I seemto recall that from the Ogwen Bank lay-by you can
follow footpaths to the bottom of the ridge, keeping clear
of the quarry, then join the path as above.

Yes, that must be all of 5 or 10 parking spaces lost.
Park at the foot of the pass (either end) and walk up,
    it's not far.

Certainly, over Easter, it didn't look as if they had any
intention of opening these spaces again! You can always
catch a Sherpa up to the car park!

    At 4 in the morning?

Public transport can rarely ever get me to the places I go
at the times I need to be there, and it's certainly no good
for a "photo drive", where I drive a convoluted route
stopping at numerous viewpoints on the way.

Serves me right jumping into the middle of a thread without
reading it - it's been that kind of a day :-(

My Easter experience suggest that the public transport isn't
there even during the main part of the day ...

At 4 in the morning I'd be rather surprised if the carpark
    were full!
