And that's an important point. Do not confuse an aggressive determination to win with being an arrogant ass. Non-cycling examples might include Bill Russell of NBA fame (an 11 time "world champion"😉, who was, putatively, a tiger on the court and a real gentleman IRL.
Also, two-time heavyweight boxing champion Floyd Patterson, all-time home-run king Hank Aaron and, of course, Greg LeMond. All winners who were absent in the arrogant ass department.

You're absolutely right. Glad you picked up on the irony. We know all these guys were fierce competitors with an above-average desire to win. 'Arrogant ass' is what lesser mortals call those who compete at a level far beyond that of lesser mortals.
Anquetil believed he was the best, and he wasn't into false modesty. Merckx, from everything I've read, is an extremely pleasant person, but his 'Cannibal' nickname on the bike was well-deserved. Ditto for Hinault's 'Badger' nickname. And Armstrong was certainly a brash, loud-mouthed Texas kid when he first turned pro, pissing off many guys in the pro peloton. He's remained just as competitive as the other guys in the list, but he's matured through all his experiences, including cancer. I, for one, think he's much more modest (and not falsely so) than he was before cancer.

Is there a limited supply of bicycles? Are they taking bicycles away from you? Is your commute route or weekend ride so crowded that those whom you deem poseurs are pushing you off it? Are they filling up all the spots in you local criterium (this is rec.bicycles.racing you've wandered into, remember)?
Of course not. You just don't like the way they look. It's snobbery, the same that you'd decry if somebody with a carbon Trek looked down on a commuter riding in T-shirt and sneakers.

I met Bill Russell while waiting for a friend in a bar in the Embarcadero skyscraper in San Francisco. He was a REALLY nice guy who was so huge that both of my hands together could barely span his hand. When he is standing he looks perfectly purportioned and since he's something like 6'8" you can tell that he must weigh close to 300 without an ounce of fat on him.
