Yeah, unfortunately though, that will have to wait a while. As (bad)
luck turns out, by the time the bike is collected and back at my house
next week I'll just be leaving to start a contract working away from
home. Save the odd snatched day, I'll be gone for perhaps a couple of
months and so won't have a chance to ride it for quite some time. I
knew that when I made the decision to bid though and am happy to wait,
safe in the knowledge that it will be sitting here, gleaming away, and
waiting patiently for me.

I've known for a long time now that I was going to buy a recumbent,
and had vague plans of doing a whole slew of test rides sometime next
year. At the very top of my shortlist was the Taifun, which seemed to
possess all the qualities I was seeking. Obviously, though, it would
be ridiculous to buy one off the bat without a damn good test.

Then I spotted that auction, my good intentions were undone, and my
inevitable spiral towards flappy black cloaks and red light sabres had
begun.

On a side note, I spoke to London Recumbents about the bike, and found
myself chatting to Oliver (a Very Helpful Chap). I told him that I'd
recently read his name in this group, in a sentence including the
words "Ditchling Beacon" and "70mph". He told me about the run and I
was in awe, of his cojones and his opinion of the accuracy and
handling of the Hurricane he was on at the time.

He he. I actually looked at that auction several times, but decided
against it in the end. Lack of finance an' all that. Enjoy it.

Primarily because of the lack of a test ride. I know that's a daft
thing to do, but my rationalisation there is that I think I've paid a
fair price for what is a very lightly used Taifun bought new last
year. If it all goes badly wrong and I really can't get on with it, I
think I should be able to re-list it myself and get (most of) my money
back.

Given that this bike, right down to the extras of included touring
side bars and throw-over-the-seat bags, is pretty much exactly what I
had chosen in my head after reading and thinking about a recumbent, I
thought it was worth the risk for the saving off the new price.

It's also a bit silly because work commitments will keep me away from
home for the next couple of months so I'm not even going to be able to
clamber on and enjoy it for quite some time.

And then there's the unexpected dent in the current account, but I
refuse to fret over that.

All in all though, I'm as excited and giggly as a 6 year old on
Christmas eve, and that can't be a bad thing.

Nice one! Given the price and chance to resell if it doesn't quite work
out I'd say a very good excuse to suspend Try Before You Buy. If I get
something daft and sporty at some point then Taifuns and Fujins are
definitely on the tryout list.
