eventually expanded a lot around SoCal. Didn't know they had grown as
far as NJ. Ingredients are fresh, meats are grilled, standards are
relatively high. Overall the food's probably a tad bit healthier than
the standard taco joint. They are also a tad more costly than the
standard taco joint. I'd say they are definitely worth your checking
them out, given that NJ is not known for great Mexican food ... :-)

By healthier I mean (at least when they started) they grilled rather
than fried and they made their own sides and salsas from fresh
ingredients. Better ingredients, lower fat leads in some general,
nonscientific way to healthier.

As to staff, they used to advertise that they trained their staff well
to be knowledgeable about their offerings, but that may well have gone
by the wayside if Wendys has now bought them. I have no idea why

Compared to most Mexican fast food places/chains that I have
experienced, Baja Fresh would be at or near the top. Rubio's would be
there too.

Nancy,

If they do things the same as they do here, they're a pretty decent alternative to
most taco shops. They grill the meat (chicken and steak, no ground beef), and the
chicken is very tasty.
What I like there is the tortilla soup, though I do add some stuff: I order a small
rice and add some of that, and also double chicken. The broth is mildly spicy, but
full of flavor. Their chicken tacos (especially with an order of Pronto Guacamole)
are pretty good too.
My husband and son love the burritos (veggie for DH and Dos Manos for my bottomless
pit son :P ) and my daughter is a fan of the chicken nachos (nachos with your choice
of black or pinto beans, grilled chicken, salsa, guac, sour cream, and REAL cheese,
not that nacho sauce stuff).

Try it, Nancy...what've you got to lose? 🙂

the mail, it caught my eye. Also, to my astonishment, I see
that a place I frequent is mentioned in Zagat? I guess I
thought of it being a tonier list of restaurants, not my kind
of place.

I haven't eaten there, but we ate at Qdoba twice in January, and it
looks similar to what has been described.

Our father was in the hospital, and in surgery, it was time to eat,
Qdoba looked better than the hospital cafeteria, it was across the
street from the hospital and my sister's car was parked several blocks
away. We wanted something quick, because there was no telling how long
the surgery would take.

That's *one* reason to go to a place like that. Although where they
live is no longer an ethnic culinary wasteland (the only Mexican place
when I lived there served chili as one dish), still, it's not wonderful.

For some reason I think the local paper's restaurant reviewer
liked it, but I'm not sure it's the place I'm thinking of ... that
was some time back. She's normally big on Indian and Chinese
