Sad but true. They are trying to bring back some of the old ambiance,
but it's way too upscale and touristy, which is ok for the tourists
but not for me.

In the fifties until the seventies, there was a deli in downtown Reno
called Tony's Delicatessen. He had a small shop within a block of the
Mapes and Riverside. When I walked into the shop, the smell of spiced
meat was strong and the evidence was hanging everywhere. There was a
huge wooden pickle barrel with cheap large pickles in it. He made
outstanding sandwiches. You could even buy exotic meat in a can. I don't
think anyone could get away with his type of shop with today's
regulations. As a provincial, I've never seen anything like it since.
It's a pity.

Here in Clayton (the most Jewish suburb of StL), we have a nice little
deli:

So many wonderful Jewish restaurants have disappeared in Manhattan. I
used to work at 4th and B'way in the 1970s and 1980s, right in the
middle of the rag trade district. There were fabulous kosher places
all over, sit down, cafeteria, dairy....I miss them all.

And of course there were more delis in those days. We had a great one
on 6th Avenue in the Village near 12th. For the life of me, I cannot
recall the name of it, but I easily recall the wonderful smells of
garlic, salami and pickles every time I walked in..
