  1. This is just ridiculous:

"The bagel is the creation of chef Frank Tujague of The Westin
    New York hotel..."

Anybody can pile on a bunch of expensive (truffle), fufu (goji
berry), and completely tasteless (gold leaf) ingredients onto a
$1 bagel and call it a "creation". It's the equivalent of
    scatological performance art.

You don't need to be a chef to come up with something as absurd
as this. And goji berries are nasty! I wonder if they'll knock
of 20% if I order one without goji.

There is something very distasteful and unappetizing about the
practice of flinging expensive foodstuffs atop a
bagel/omelet/hamburger/whatever and declaring it the world's most
expensive example of the same. I'm sure it is good publicity for the
preparer, but it is not appealing.

How about the most delicious bagel? I bet a perfectly prepared,
baked, and toasted everything bagel topped with fresh and rich cream
cheese tastes better than some vulgar display.

I agree! That, freshly baked and *not* toasted, possibly with
the addition of smoked salmon, is the most and I'm not a New
Yorker but an immigrant: from Scotland :-)!!

You bet it does, Tara. That's precisely what I had for breakfast at the
office this morning. I keep fresh cream cheese in the office fridge, and
pick up a fresh bagel most mornings on my way to the office.

I didn't know you live in NYC... there are no bagels anywhere else,
and certainly not fresh... more than an hour out of the oven it ain't
    fresh.
Fresh cream cheese in the office fridge...

you never tasted fresh cream cheese... but so what, you never ate a

That's exactly what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow morning.

DH is just about home -- 1/2 hour to go -- Besides bottles of wine from our
favorite wine store in NJ, roasted coffee from Greencastle, Pennsylvania ,
bittersweet Ghiradelli chocolate from TJ's and newly found Kerrybrook butter
and WheatMontana flour from Wegmans, Bethlehem and WheatMontana , he's got
3 dozen bagels from my absolutely favorite bagel place in Connecticut. The
only place he missed in Calandra's in Fairfield (recommended by Boron) for
    the sfogliatella - another time.

I just gotta love that guy!

Thanks for letting me know she had a site; if I knew it, I'd forgotten. I
know I'd never make this, any more than I'd make puff pastry.

DH did check at Trader Joe's in Darien, CT and found that they carry the
all-butter puff pastry; however, not enough available ice in the car to risk
    bringing it home without deterioration.

Next week on a trip to Baltimore (they have a Little Italy where we'll be) I
would love to find a bakery where they carry sfogliatella.
But I don't see anything so far googling it.
