Hope your friend gets better soon. And yeah, as bad as it sounds, it could have been a whole lot worse without a helmet.

I can fully concure with what you say here about helmets.

I had a bad fall 10 days ago and ended up going over the handlbars and head first on to concrete, going at 19mph.
My helmet shattered as I hit the ground.
It is surreal to see yourself sliding down the road, with your bike mounting the pavement.
I've a badly busted right knee (only 40% movement in it) but that will repair.

The twenty six mile ride back home after that crash wasn't too pleasurable however.
If I hadn't been wearing my helmet, I don't care to think what could have happened.

I don't have any "my helmet saved my life" stories, but one time I did go down hard when my crank broke and my helmet and head slid across the pavement for about 5 feet before stopping. Would certainly have been a nasty head injury, but not fatal. I walked away with nary a scratch, didn't even need a new helmet right away... it was scraped up, but intact.

It was totally unexpected and caught me right off guard.
(you know yourself you can sometimes do something to lessen the impact, in my case it happened too quickly, for me to be able to react).
I was very fortunate to have a helmet (MET), but the helmet shattered which shows you the impact of the fall.

On todays Giro, a Euskatel rider had a bad fall and I'd say his helmet probably prevented more serious damage.

She's fine, except for her broken wrist...they kinda set it back in position at the ER but she has to go in for Surgery (probably screws and plates, so they said) one Day this week...

I think Cycling will be out for the rest of her vacation...

I hate helmets ..... I hate everything about them except that they do save our heads....... And if that is the only thing I like about them , it is a great reason to wear one...... The only two accidents I have had in the last 2 years were caused by tree branches catching my helmet when trail riding ....... pulled me off the bike. But I know if I ever go down , I will be better off with one of them on .

It never fails to make me cringe when I read posts like this one. I can just imagine what serious damage would occur without the helmet. I haven't experienced a real big crash, *knock on wood* but I never fail to wear my helmet, long ride or short ride. I wish you all a speedy recovery!

I was like you - I was very very ambivalent about helmets.
They make you sweat more, they're a pain in the neck etc.

But I went out and bought a sweatband to solve the sweat issue, and forced myself to wear a helmet.
And I'm now glad I did.

(if I appear to be a zealot about this, you'll understand, I'm sure).

For me is just like the commercial, I never leave home with out it.

Maybe it's for my MTB origins, but helmet it's mandatory for me and I feel uncomfortably with out it, it's like the car's security belt, you feel strange when you don't wear it.

I even have two helmets, one for training and one for racing, the one for racing, Giro Pneumo, it's so light that some times I have to check if it's still over my head!!

Lim, hope you get better soon, I’m glad that your head it’s still working well, it would be scary to hear that you agree with Zapp about something … 😄

I'll repeat my post of about 2 months ago. I hit a dog at about 15mph, but don't remember much after that. I regained consciousness about 10 minutes later with a paramedic helping me up to my feet. My ribs were hairline cracked and hurt like hell for a few weeks as I had landed on the bars with them. My key ring was so twisted that it poked holes through my pocket.
My helmet had a baseball size bash on the right frontal lobe area. I never even had a headache. It probably saved my life. I was able to complete the 7 remaining mile ride home.
