  1. I recently started training pretty hard for my sixth century.

I began having excruciating pain in one of my testicles after riding for a little while.

The time it takes before the pain occurs is getting longer as I am training, started at 12 miles, now up to around 38 miles.

I encountered the same thing on my first century, around mile 60...it went away eventually and I finished the ride.

Is this something anyone else has gone through? Should I get checked out or just see if it phases out like it has in the past? Could I be overtraining? It seems to happen more when I ride on very hilly courses, could I be straining myself?

Thanks for any advice you all can give!

  2. Is it possible your bike seat has moved some? Did your change pedals, shoes, or seat height? Maybe one of your cleats is more wore than the other? (for me, my left cleat wears out before my right, because I kick out always on my left side). Did your lower your handlebars? Are you spending more time in the drops? This may sound weirder than some of the above, but did you change brands of bike shorts?

    None of the above. BUT

I did just start riding 6 days a week after having rode maybe once every couple of weeks.

Suggest you see your doctor about a possible hernia. No need to endure pain and put yourself at risk for something that can be corrected. You can search for lots of info online; here's one link:

I think you just answered your own question. 🙂

Sounds like you need to back off some, and build more of a "base".

I would suggest rides of 20-30 miles every other day for two weeks. Do a couple of sprints for city signs to get your HR up, then recover and sit back in the 55-60% HR zones. Then increase to 35-50 miles every other day with a 10-15 mile recovery ride in between. But unless your 18 again you can't go from riding 1 time every 14 days to 6 days a week overnight. 🙂 good luck!

thanks...I dont think that is what it is though, because after a half hour of being off the bike I feel fine, and the pain is slowly phasing out to more miles before it hurts. Also, the first time this happened, I had been checked for a hernia during an annual physical, and was fine.

    Thanks.

none of the symptoms on the link, either.

    Well, I AM only 23 😉

But I think you are right. Just overtraining. When I had this problem before, it went away after I got into the training further....just wanted some reassurance that I'm not hurting myself. I think it will be almost gone within the next couple of weeks.

My training is approx. as follows: mon-10 easy miles tue-15 hard wed-off thurs-15 medium fri-50 sat-27 sun-15 medium

numbers increase to 75 miles on the friday the week before the century.

Same regimen I used before, and it worked great for me personally.

    Thanks for the help!

It sounds like your cutting off the circulation to your testicle for a short time. If this is the problem and it last for more then a couple of hours then go see a doctor right away.

good to know...maybe it is my lack of form due to lack of riding causing this. never lasts for more than a half hour or so, so I think I'm okay.

    thanks for the input!

  11. If it is as excrutiating as you say then it's a warning that something is not right, I would get it checked out by the doc.

After all no-one wants to loose one!!!

WHAT'S WRONG WITH LOSING ONE? WITH ONLY ONE, I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BOTH OF THEM. I JUST PUT THE REMAINING ON THE SIDE...AND GO.

    LMAO..thats great!

Naw, I think I'll be fine, really. My post was really to find out if anyone else had this same problem before and had something bad happen...which doesn't seem to be the case.

I went on a VERY hard ride yesterday, with possibly the steepest hill I've ever gone up on the road, and I felt just fine the whole way.

    Looks like I'm cured!
