The mechanism is the same. If it's getting out to uk.test it's getting
out to uk.cycling - unless your upstream peer doesn't carry uk.cycling,
in which case you can't read it either.

software is properly configured, once it is you can make meaningful on-
topic posts to the groups of your choice.

software is properly configured, once it is you can make meaningful on-
topic posts to the groups of your choice.

My apologies - I didn't know about the existence of the test newsgroup. I've
had to find a new (free) newsgroup ISP because the idiots at Talktalk can't
keep a news service running properly and won't offer support anyway. I
assumed the heading to the message would tell everybody all they needed to
know and I really can't see why it should upset you. But sorry anyway.

You will actually get a better test in a test newsgroup, because there
are bots set up to monitor posts to them - these will send you an email
when your post is received on another server, so you know that it has
propagated and isn't just sitting on your local server (where you can
see it but pretty much nobody else can).

I had meant to be helpful, not to chide. The reason why it's a bad idea
to post explicit test messages to discussion groups is because people
don't like it, and because if too many people did it the groups would
become unusable.

If you /do/ want to post a test message to a discussion group, disguising
it as a normal discussion post is the best solution - works just as
well. But the test groups are there for explicitly this purpose.

How bad are they? I'd heard they were Not Good and have tried to warn
a friend off but more evidence would be useful.
