No specific knowledge with regard to bicycle teams, but I can tell you that I and lots of friends use cheapie motorola FRS radios while on motorcycles and have no trouble, even at speed. We use systems made by MotoComm. I think your problem is not with the radio itself, but with the speakers/microphone.

I am planning to invest in some 2-way radios for TTT work, so I am trying to solve essentially the same problem. I plan to try out several types of radios (both VHF and UHF) before making a decision. Here in Las Vegas there are firms that rent radios by the day. There are also some online sites that rent these radios. For example, motorola2wayradios.comradio rentals.htmlOpen ↗. These radios are heavily used in the construction industry, so you might want to make some inquiries about the availability of firms that rent these radios in Monterrey.

Probably not classified information - but I know that around here (Washington - Oregon) unless you are a Pro team (or at least racing in a Pro/1 field) you are not allowed to use race radios so there's no reason that any of us would know which ones to use......

I remember a telecast showing the radio that Lance uses. It was this small silver thing that looked like a folded Razr phone. Chances are what they use is not available to the public as evidenced by this article.

That is a USCF rule. I lost track of what the exact situation is now. The USCF keeps changing the radio rules. You should have heard the Cat 4/5 heroes complain about it a few years ago when use was restricted to Pro/1/2; you would have thought you were forcing them to ride without brifters.

Scott, I see that one of the systems that MotoComm integrates use Midland radios, and that's one of the GMRS options that I'm looking.

RapMan, good idea to rent before you buy, but I don't think that's an option here in Monterrey, I'm not even buying anything here, I'm going to McAllen o Laredo TX to get them.

Eden, interesting information. Didn't know that not professional teams are not allowed to use radios, racing it's so different with and with out that I can understand the reason. Even doe, I prefer to use them so, I hope that when I will have the opportunity to go to Washington - Oregon area to do some racing it will be as a pro ... yeah, in my dreams ... :-)

Graphix, great info. I will look for Alinco brochures now. I had seen the AMD note, but I was not able to find any related advertising or dealers offering 2 way radios made by them.

The US national team uses radios made by Kenwood.
