When I read that on cyclingnews, my first thought was that some morons on

Well, I understand that sprinters in track and field events try to
anticipate the starters gun. Drag racers try to do the same thing with the
starting lights. If they jump too soon, it isn't because they were trying
to intentionally start before the gun. They get a restart if they jump and
are disqualified after a certain number of false starts.

However, to tell your kid to go BEFORE the guy says go, is to tell and teach
your child to cheat. To do that, IMO, one has to be possessed of a
cheater's mentality.

But, the Lance worshipers will defend him no matter what he does.

No. I wouldn't. It's an irrelevant question, though. You've twisted
things again. Lance didn't tell his kid to break the rules of the game. He
told his kid to hit the gas before the starter said go. In racing, it's
done all the time. You anticipate the start. If you anticipate wrong and
break the start line prematurely, you're screwed. If you anticipate right,
you hit the start line perfectly and yes ... you might have an advantage
over the competition who didn't also execute this perfectly legal maneuver.
I used to swim competitively. We always tried to anticipate the start.
Throughout a meet we'd listen to the rhythm of the starter and try to get it
down pat so that we could be leaning into the start just enough to get an
advantage, but not be disqualified. On relays, you begin your dive before
the swimmer in the water has touched -- in an effort to be as laid out, but
with your toes still on the block, as possible. There's nothing immoral or
unethical about it. It's the way it's done.

I'm sure when you have such venomous hatred for someone as you obviously do
for Lance, you see all these things as evil. I don't think he's any saint.
(Technically speaking, he's CLEARLY not a saint.) I think dumping his wife
and cavorting around the planet with a rock star is despicable. But I don't
know any details and, if I did, I might view things a little differently. I
think what he did to Simeoni was just plain stupid. As for my views on his
alleged doping ... I think it's just that ... alleged. There's nothing that
would convict him in any court in this land. If/when there is, I'll line up
to cast stones with everyone else.

But in many respects, he's a remarkable man. And until I see/hear something
other than rumor and innuendo, I'll also regard him as a remarkable athlete.

When I am doing a standing start in a kilo, my mind tells me to go on the
"one count" before the gun, bell, whistle, etc. It takes a moment for that
thought to travel to my legs and get going. But I always tell those I ride
with to Go before the gun goes off, if not you left to late. Does that mean
I am cheating?
