It was actually the other way round - I noticed it too. The reason I'm sure
you got it the wrong way round is because (without giving anything away) the
one who did the four kisses was the younger fellow, and I think that has
something to do with it.

If it's any consolation, the French aren't too sure either. For certain
(ish) rural Brittany, introduced to a stranger, 2 kisses; friend 3
kisses; good friends and family 4 kisses.

Paris: Don't try it!

Gap: 3 kisses (I think).

I have a friend from Gap who admitted that most French people were
mildly confused by it and tend to rely on reflexes and watch the other
person. Despite this, life goes on without obvious incident.

My wife is Romanian/Hungarian (Transilvanian)... We normally go for one
good one (being married and all that) but with friends it seems to be two..
left, right. Maybe another left is for latent communists?

I think the girls are fairly safe from such onslaughts - the cyclists
concerned have just finished a TdF stage. I'm amazed they can even stand
on the podium without passing out.

Given who won the KOTM I am not surprised he went for the double kiss, the
interviews with him afterwards explain why he had special reasons for
attacking and trying to win today. Given his epic escapade, it can be put
down to relief and excitement as well as a hint of sadness given who he
dedicated the win too- the bloke was in tears not long after being on the
podium.

Does anybody remember a stage a couple of years ago where the winner was
really happy and enthusiastic with his kisses? Unfortunately I can't
rememeber anything more about it.

Well it was Bastille Day and he's always had a tendency to try and 'endear'
