  1. Okay, so the winner gets the yellow jersey, champagne, kisses from French
beauties, endorsement contracts and all that other stuff.

What does the guy who finishes last get? Seems as though there should be a
prize for perseverance -- after all, he probably knows a few days before
that end that he will be Tail End Charlie -- but he keeps pumping away.
And -- finishing last in the TDF is nothing to sneeze at.

He get's to say he finished the TdF. A lot more than even some TdF
    riders get to say.

His team pays him. If he got any bonuses during the checks he will get
    some of that too.

He also gets a goodie bag with a water bottle, TdF T-shirt, Motrin, Chap
    Stick and coupons.

For the notariety of being the Lanterne Rouge, he gets start money in
the post Tour kermesses. That's the incentive.

  5. Speaking of which - has anybody ever finish last more than once?

Just in the last ten years, Jimmy Casper (2001 and 2004). Flores
is on track to do it since he brought up the rear in 2002.

since some teams pool (as I recall it's custom for overall winner at
least..)prize monies he gets a cut of that...... Oh and a shot at
another pro contract, which means he has the opportunity to be do it
    again next year.

    What Sundquist said.

There was a year (years?) when the last rider to cross the finish line on
each stage was eliminated. (I think it was only in the last week, or on
certain stages?). Gerhard Schönbacher (Austria, lanterne rouge 1979 and
1980, "lebenskünstler"😉 talked about it last night on a Tour show on tv.

Yes, that was in 1980 (14th to 20th stage). In 1948 the "real" lanterne
rouge (the last in the general classification) was eliminated from the 3th
    to the 18th stage.
