TDF outsider could win.....???

The problem is the mountains between here and Paris. There's quite a
few, and I have no confidence in Gonchar's ability to lose less than a
few minutes in the mountains.

The irony being that the course that was custom-built for Jan may, when it's
all said and done, still smile on T-Mobile.

Errr, there's three mountain top finishes in between here and that TT.
Gonchar is looking great this year but he's going to have to fight all the
way with Floyd, Paolo and Moreau (surprisingly enough - Moreau has looked
excellent the last two tours and I think that he stands a pretty good chance
if he can maintain his form in the mountains as last year.)

Savoldelli absolutely could pull one off. He doesn't climb like the real
eagles but this year who does? Popovyvch is a dark horse and I suspect that
he will only ride for Paolo and George this year.

I think that Floyd has the edge though. He's late enough in his career to
have the TT and climbs down pat. He can hold his temper and stay within
himself in emergencies. I think he's faster than Moreau who is the other one
that has the same sort of stability.

Cadel Evans is another outside chance. He can absolutely blow everyone away
on the climbs if he's on the boil. Klöden is dynamite but usually blows up
on at least one stage.

I'm somewhat surprised that Discovery didn't bring Tom Danielson to the
Tour. I think that he's a more likely candidate as future team leader than
Popovych.

Those guys are the favorites - I singled out Gonchar not because I
actually think he will win, but because a) stranger things have
happened, and b) it would be a great Cinderella story for a longtime pro
who has had a fruitful career, but just never showed himself at the very
top.

It's possible that Phonak will be his weakness and perhaps it will be
'fatal'. We'll see what happens. I'm hoping Klöden or Menchov will win, but
as an atheist from a mennonite background I feel some sympathy for brother
Landis.
