You have to realize that they are here and gone in a matter of
minutes. You choose a nice spot and wait for hours just for those mere
minutes.

I've found that the best way is to find a place near the start, say
Gravesend or so, and then go swiftly to the local pub and watch the
race on the telly from the safety, warmth and great view over the rim
of a good beer.

There's another alternative you might investigate:

Go to the finish - they should have a large screen Tele there.

Then right after the finish, find the spot where the team busses are
parked - that way you can get a close up of the riders and autographs
etc possibly

Really? I think seeing and talking to the riders is a lot easier
before the race begins than after the race finishes. After, they're
pretty much in a mood to get in the bus and go.

before the race begins than after the race finishes. After, they're
pretty much in a mood to get in the bus and go.

Yes, the riders are usually more appoachable and relaxed before the start.
Problem is you'll need accreditation to get anywhere near the team buses,
they're sure to be in a fenced off compound.

Tour of Murcia- fenced off - but managed to blag

Vuelta- fenced off - accreditation is needed
TdF- fenced off - accreditation needed
Giro - not attended so can't comment

Tour de Langkawi- not fenced off but accreditation needed to get near finish
line

Hmmm. I've been to more finishes but as for starts: Tour de France,
Paris (prologue), and Rennes. Starts at Paris-Nice in Issy-les-
Moulineaux. Criterium International in Charleville-Mezieres. Not
fenced off.
