  1. Hi,

I have a question about yesterdays stage...

Apparently some Italian rider attempted a breakaway and ITV2 claimed that LA
spoke to him & told him to get back in the main group. (he was not a US
    postal member)

Apparently he does not like the Italian rider, who he is suing as a result
of calling LA a liar (anyone know anything about this?)

They interviewed the Italian bloke who claimed that LA had asked Chippolini
(?) not to pick him for the Team. LA denied this but Gary Imlach implied
that he thought there may be some truth to it

Anyway, any ideas why the rider took any notice of LA (who he plainly does
not like, to say the least). The ITV2 team where implying that LA is such a
powerful figure in the sport that he can do this ??

That would be Simeoni. He believes Armstrong is on dope because
Armstrong's doctor is Michele Ferrari, who has a rather iffy track
record in this respect. Simeoni is now suing Armstrong for calling him
    a liar!

Glad you've asked this, I was wondering the same thing myself. Not
being at all interested in the ins and outs of professional cycling, I
was left somewhat bewildered about that report on yesterdays ITV2
program, but also equally curious, especially Gary Imlach's statement
of ' Lance Amrstrong needing a grudge like .....[whatever he said].

Underneath the surface of it all...

I assumed that the suggestion was that Lance made it clear that the
breakaway wouldn't succeed in Simeoni was in it - i.e. USP would chase
it down - so there was no point in Simeoni trying?

    Simeoni sounds like a nut.

He may well think someone is on dope, but when that person denies it, he
    *sues* them?

Still, I'm a thousand miles away, so the real situation probably very

A certain amount of co-operation exists between riders and teams. A strong
team can assist or impede another from getting gaining prominence that will
stand them in good stead with their sponsors.
Super Mario himself (Chippoleni) was a past master at gaining positive
attention = good publicity for sponsor.

    Simeoni sounds like a nut.

He may well think someone is on dope, but when that person denies it, he

AIUI, Simeoni admitted doping, and was suspended for 3 months. The 'Doctor'
who supplied him has been working with Armstrong recently. Simeoni has
insinuated that LA was also supplied by this Doctor.LA called him a
liar.Simeoni denies being a liar, and took him(LA) to Court for slander,
    or the Italian equivalent.
LA is well [censored] because of this, so according to Simeoni, he has tried
to get Simeoni thrown out of his team. LA denies everything, so,
yesterday, he didnt like his accuser going for a stage win, follwoed him
to a breakaway, and in effect,by being in the break, didnt give the break
any chance of getting away from the Peloton.
To allow the break to get away, LA told Simeoni to get back into the
peloton,or he'll be shadowing him all day.Other riders in the break then
'persuaded' Simeoni to go back, to allow them the chance of a stage win,
which would not be possible with LA in the break.

I don't know the ins and outs of the situation but this happens in pro
racing and has for as long as I have been following it (20 years). The
senior riders have much respect in the peleton and do use their authority to
a certain extent to keep things in check. Fondriest, Lemond and Fignon
played these cards often. At some point there will be a change in the
pecking order, every dog has its day.

"LA needs a grudge like the Flying Scotsman needs coal - its what keeps him
    going"

Then mention that LA would earn in a month more than the other guy would
    earn ever

Still not sure how LA can simply tell another rider to get back in the
    peleton!

Which is a little ironic since The Flying Scotsman (4472) broke down again

Sounds fair enough to me. This goes on in all sorts of other sports,
sometimes quite brutal. I remember footballer Roy Keane being slighted by
Alf Inge Haaland. Keane describes how he deliberately goes for Haaland in a
tackle and badly injures him. Who can forget Schumaker taking out Damon
Hill, after Schumi had crashed leaving Hill to take the championship?

If I was truly clean like Armstrong says he is, then I'd go after someone
who tried to insinuate it was all down to drugs. If the drugs are so
miraculous then how come David Millar was so inconsistent?

I believe Lance is clean and his success is down to sheer hard work, his
incredible will to win and his superior team and although I can understand
people not liking him (like people hate Schumaker or Man Utd), he is a hero
and inspiration to millions of people not even in the cycling world.

Anyone who reads his books cannot fail to be moved by his story which
    transcends mere sport.

No, it's the other way around. The Italian rider, Simeoni, is suing Lance in
the Italian courts, as Lance called him a liar. There is no love lost between
    them right now.

My own view entirely (also including the snipped material).

What Lance writes in his autobiography is something which in my
experience *can only be written* by someone who truely knows themselves.

It simply is something you cannot fake.

I do not believe for a second Lance is using drugs.
