TDF English Route in 1994?

IIRC Stage 4 went from Dover to Brighton via Cantebury. Stage 5 started and finished in Portsmouth..

Dover to Brighton -- that's it. I'd like to know the exact route of the Portsmouth TT in that case.
I live nearby and I'd like to have a go at the route (I think it went through Bishop's Waltham which
is on a regular route of mine).

Simon, I can't help noticing you keep referring to the Portsmouth stage as a TT. If by this you mean
time-trial it wasn't. It was normal massed start stage so comparing your time with the winner will
be a bit unrealistic unless you can get a group of like minded friends to go with you!

I thought I'd read somewhere it was a time trial. Oh well.

As for comparing my time with that of the winner, I could easily match him. I've been commuting for
at least year now so I should think my fitness would easily match that of a TDF rider!

I was stood at the top of Harting Hill that day and a great day out it was. 120 mile round trip ride
on a lovely day and the chance to see the tour for the second consecutive day. I spotted Lemond as
well. Actually it wasnt that difficult as he was off the back at the time. IIRC he retired shortly
afterwards. Ah memories.

We were at the top of Harting as well. What a fantastic atmosphere, loud cheering and applause for
all who cycled to the top, especially the tandems. High fiving the publicity caravan yelling
encouragement at the riders and finally cheering as the police van at the very end struggled to the
top to the accompanying smell of a burnt-out clutch. The only miserable people were the French
police escort who appeared to feel "naked" as they'd had to leave their guns in France.

I rode most of the Hants stage the week before. It was pretty flat really.
