10ème étape - 252,5 kilomètres

Cols : Portet d'Aspet, Port, Port d'Envalira, Ordino et la montée d'Andorre-Arcalis
Après sa 2ème place dans le Tour de France 1996, on le devinait. L'Allemand Jan Ullrich, 23 ans, est un grand champion. Il est rentré dans l'histoire du cyclisme par la grande porte en remportant cette 10ème étape du Tour de France 1997.

Et quelle étape ! Plus de 252 km, 6 cols et une montée finale de 32 kilomètres ! Depuis 2 jours, pour protéger son leader Bjarne Riis, Jan Ullrich s"est contenté de contrôler Marco Pantani et Richard Virenque. Mais les faiblesses de Bjarne Riis laissent la champ libre à Jan Ullrich. Alors, à 10 kilomètres du sommet d'Arcalis, il décide de jouer sa carte personnelle. Quelle démonstration ! On pense que la passation de pouvoir vient d'avoir lieu.

Seul Richard Virenque, en grande forme, peut suivre le natif de Rostock. Après avoir répondu une première fois à un démarrage de Jan Ullrich, il ne peut rien faire sur la deuxième attaque de l'Allemand. Le train imposé par Jan Ullrich est phénoménal et les écarts se creusent rapidement. Jan Ullrich rejoint tout d'abord le Français Cédric Vasseur, qui s'était échappé afin de savourer ses derniers instants avec le maillot jaune, puis, Jean-Philippe Dojwa, alors en tête de l'étape.

Sans donner l'impression de forcer, l'Allemand dira plus tard : "J'ai roulé à ma main, au train... A un moment, je me suis retourné, je n'ai vu personne, alors j'ai continué". A l'arrivée, Richard Virenque et Marco Pantani sont à plus d'une minute. Après l'analyse de la course, Richard Virenque avouera : "J'espère qu'il ne va pas remporter 5 Tours de France !". Bernard Hinault, quant à lui, voit Jan Ullrich parti pour dominer le Tour de France pendant 7 ou 8 ans. Série en cours...

The climb was Arcalis, same as the stage finish. As a comparison, Alpe d'huez is also often both referred to as a climb and a stage finish. I'm sure Arcalis has featured on the tour since 1997 but can't remember when off the top of my head.

I don't know about the TdF, but Stage 10 of last year's Vuelta a Espana finished with a climb up the Arcalis in Andorra (Arcalis is a ski resort). I presume it was the same climb as the 1997 TdF but it may have been from the other side. Menchov won the stage.

From memory Jan won the the Andorra stage on the way to winning the Vuelta in 99......

and jan did not win the stage to androra 99 in the vuleta

jan have did a tt stage up to the andora in 2004 or 2005 in tour of romanide or sarthe

the stage to androa 99 was won by gonzalo di galdeiano..

and that was the stage olano lose the yersy to ulle

Good ole George went from being 37 minutes back with the likes of Blilevens to winning mountain stages at the tour. Good stuff.
