The one I have a special interest in seeing is the group performing
the deer imitations in urban settings like midtown NYC. I went out on
Atlantic Avenue this morning (well, I suppose most folks call 2:00 PM
"afternoon"😉 and hereby testify that after performing the ritual
Daniel describes, no deer bolted away. Nor did it provoke a moose
    attack.

Did it provoke much of anything ? I imagine if you did it on the subway, it
would probably "provoke" a lot of people to quietly move away, and avoid eye
contact. You might be able to even get yourself a seat on the 4/5 during
rush hour via judicious use of this technique.

    Cheers,

    ["ear talk" with deer thing . . . ]

A logical, but highly speculative theory. While it makes perfect sense, I
can't help wondering if you're overthinking this, perhaps in part because
I am prejudiced by the prevalece of participants in this forum with GPSs
agonizing over the difference between a 3.91 mile run and a 3.92 mile run.

I'd be curious to see how well this would do against a "control" strategy of
doing absolutely nothing, and another control which involves the same thing,
    sans the goofy deer imitation.

    Cheers,

Right. Have done these things as well as jumping up and down, and
throwing my hat off to one side . . .

Problem is coming up with volunteer deer who will agree to meet me at
mile three-point-whatever of my 7.2 mile run each Sunday morning at an
agreed time. If I could just try different approaches with the same
deer group (all double-blind and certified of course) then Science
would really be advancing, to say nothing of inter-species
    communication.

By the way the "do nothing" option leads to lower-leg cramps because
the stupid deer will stand there staring (clearly he's thinking, "If I
stay still I will be invisible!"😉 for longer than I care to let my
    sweat dry.

Oh, and it isn't goofy to the *deer*, you speciesist! ;-)
