I have a specialized allez its about 3 years old, and i have done much
more riding than i have maintenance. So i started taking stuff apart
cleaning oiling and greasing, no major bike mechanic here by the way.
I'm stuck on removing the crank. It looks like each arm has a tapered
square whole that the arm fits over as a compression fitting. If this
is the case all i need is a hammer and a punch i guess, anyone have
any idea what i should be doing?

Don't do that. Consult our FAQ:
http://draco.acs.uci.edu/rbfaq/FAQ/index.htmlthen get the right tool - a 22mm crank puller

Most importantly, before you remove the crank, relax and spend some
time un-screwing the center-bolt of the crank-puller so that you can
insert the puller ALL THE WAY INTO the crank threads. As soon as the crank is out and before puller is even removed from the
arm, spend some time un-screwing the center-bolt of the puller so that
next time you can insert the puller ALL THE WAY INTO the crank threads.Get the message?
If you do this obsessively and always use the right tool (NOTE: larger
23.0 and 23.15 mm pullers are needed for older 1970's and earlier
stronglight and TA cranks), you will never strip a crankset's removal
threads.- Don Gillies

inserting the puller.--
