Fasting means you should have nothing in your system. So no meds until after the test. Why do you
fast for 12-14 hours? I was told 8 hours was enough.

The only time I've been told to fast was before I had my lipid panel. Of course I take my BG every
morning before I eat, but that varys between 6-8 hrs. I've never fasted before an A1c.

Thanks for input Julie! I don't stick to exactly 12 hours, sometimes 10 ,11,
but always more than 8 which I understand to be the minimum. I have a
slightly larger meal day before knowing I will fast! An extra hour or so is
no big deal. Thanks again!!

I agree with Julie. Have you posted before, Larry? If not, welcome to the group. AFAIK fasting
shouldn't matter for A1c but it is a requirement (by definition) for FBG. I try to arrange my
appointment to be the first after the doors open in the morning, so that I can have breakfast
straight after. What do you use as your definition of "basically under control"?

What would be the difference between me testing FBG at home and the Dr's office doing it? If the Dr.
saw my meter readings why would they even want to take a FBG?

There shouldn't be any apart from meter tolerances, but doctors are professionals and never
trust amateurs.

Our only qualification is that our life may depend on it.

In my case, they are usually doing a fairly long vampire act for lots of other things, lipids, haemo
etc, which also require fasting, so it's no big deal.

I usually fast for 12 hours. As for taking your meds, if your doc tells you to take your meds, why
are you asking for a second opinion from the non docs here? Most diabetes meds, are maintained at a
constant level in your bloodstream. Not taking them one morning, isn't going to make a huge
difference one way or another, but if your doc told you to take them, I think you should take them.

Hi Sleepyman Why I waas concerned is this. I awake at 4:45 AM to get ready
for work. Blood test, Shower and then Med and then Breakfast and off to work
and start 7AM. My Dr's earliest appt for test is 8:15 which is where I can
stop by real quick and in and out in 15 min's. I am lucky for that! IF I did
my med as usual without breakfast which I can't have, I def would go LOW and
whats the point of the test? I think I should wait till after test and then
MEd and Eat! Agree?? Larry

Thanks Alan! In answer to your questions, this is my 'First' post, though I
have been watching it from time to time. By saying I am "Basically" under
control, I think like everyone else it probably will never be OK! But, Got
my numbers down in Morning to 90's and touch 100 - 110 on occassion on using
'Now' only 2.5 Mg of Glucotrol whereas I started out on Max dose of it, so
now you can see why I made that statement. Still, lots of surprises probably
await as I can see around me reading this group. Getting back to the
testing, I knew that A1C can be taken at ANY time of day with or without
fasting, it's just that I wanted to be sure of not dropping my readings if I
had to wait for Dr and then the #'s would drop for my FBG. I will not take
Anything till after the sample from now on! Thanks All!! Larry

When you do your tests, do you only do an A1c and Glucose tests? EG, when I do my quarterlies, I get
my A1c plus all my lipids,CBC, plus any other assorted sundry tests my doc has ordered for me. That
is the reason for my fast. If you are doing just an A1c, why are you fasting in the first place?
Glucotrol XL is an extended release med correct? Again I don't think taking it would cause a
problem, but did you ask your doc why he wants you to take it, if you think you will go low if you
do? Why don't you give him a call to double check?

Welcome again.

Unlike many first-time posters who think they are in control, those numbers look good to me. I
presume they are fasting from what you said. My personal experience has been that the post-prandial
numbers are equally important in assisting you to gain control and the HbA1c is the indicator of
longer term good (or bad) control.

If you have been lurking, you will have seen Jennifer's advice already. Just in case you haven't,

noticed me boasting about my own results on another thread in alt.support.diabetes. Sure, that was
a little "ego" thing for me, bit it also shows that the "test,test,test" advice works, at least for

Hi Sleepman I DO get the whole panel done, which includes FBG and A1C, so I
will probably double check with Doc, but think I should hold off that extra
3 hours or so for my Med. I can sway a few hours on Med which does happen.
