In tonight's Standard; South West Trains are enforcing a bike ban in the peak hours. Seems like the 5th time they have announced this. Apparently this is in line with SET and Thameslink. Making room for paying passengers seems the main reason. There was a particularly patronising quote from a Thameslink spokesman; "It seems strange taking one form of transport and putting it on another" yeah right, most bikes go 100mph between Bedford and London don't they?
I've now seen / heard that quote about 4 times. Editors must love it. The retort in Cycle was something along the lines of "Have they never come across the Channel Tunnel / Ferries?"

Meanwhile on (for the moment) sensible Southern (was South Central) it's 2 bikes on every 3/4 carriages on the new stock, so far fairly civilsed even with 3. The talk among cyclists on my line is which folder to buy for when the axe comes down; mine is currently hibernating in the shed waiting the ban and some useable 20" HP tyres.

Last year one jobsworth SWT guard tried that with me at Waterloo, citing the folded Brommie in the vestibule as a safety hazard. The pile of cases, the child in a pushchair and about 10 other crushed commuters iwere apparently acceptable.

Yes, I once crossed the road using the tube and one change of line. Euston Square to Warren Street IIRC. I didn't realise at the time I was taking 15 minutes to cross the road.
But if SWT think its "strange taking one form of transport and putting it on another" then surely they must think people walking onto their trains strange.

like Queensway to Bayswater; probably further to walk between the entrances via the tube and a change at Notting hill gate than by foot along the pavement. Must say I walk anything less than about 3 stops in the centre.

We have an ongoing argument with building management at work; they have a ban on bringing bikes into the offices (well, OK), but one day a security guard decided that folders (folded and carried) were covered under the ban. Of course, once he'd made this daft snap decision he wouldn't back down despite all the logical arguments. Fortunately, one of the company directors applied pressure to the building management, but every now and then one of the guards gets shirty about it.

I was at Kings in London. We'd always try to get the Freshers to go to teh Students Union by tube.. Aldwych-Holborn-Leicester Square-Embankment-Temple ...
Or take a 100m walk. You could cut out one change by going Holborn-South Ken-Temple but it would take a lot longer.

Given that they are providing a service perhaps more pressure is needed on the building operator.
