Amanda, I am glad you are checking it out medically. I hope you have a sports minded doctor. My dentist is a marathon runner and he always asks good questions.

I went to the doc's and the verdict was that it was one of those things, however she recommended that I get some foam to just pull the shoulder straps away from my body in the chest area, as although the strap weren't tight she thought that the slight pressure from the strap as I swing my arms (or walk with poles) on the glands by my armpits might be reducing the return flow and therefore causing the swelling. The other advice was the same as some of you have suggest and that I try to move my hands - preferably above heart height!)
Anyway, thanks for the help. This time next week I'll be getting ready to start the 40 miles (getting quite nervous now).
