  1. Hi everyone!

How good to have found this group! There seem to be some real experts
around. I hope you can help me with some questions I have. :-)

I am 21 years old, 6'4'' tall and I weigh about 140 lbs. It's my aim
to improve muscle growth and to get a better looking body by swimming
several times each week. I am not very well-trained (as my BMI might
suggest, too) although I have been running for some time now. All the
swimming that I've done so far was at school. I wasn't successful but
    it was great fun.

My main question is: How do I get started now? All I can do is breast-
stroke, and I would very much like to learn breastcrawl. Do you know
any good online sources on how to learn that? How often should I go
swimming each week? Should I first do breaststroke in order to get a
feeling for swimming or is it also possible to start with learning
    frontcrawl right away?

There are a few more questions I have but I think the ones above are
enough for the moment. :-) It would be great if you guys could help
me getting started! Many thanks in advance!

    Best wishes
    Alex

  2. Alex, if I were you, I would go to a library and get a book with pictures on
what front crawl looks like. I would download some swim videos of excellent
swimmers doing the front crawl. Both of these will give you a mental image
of what the body looks like when doing the front crawl. It seems like a
    good place to start.

  3. Hi Pat,

thanks for the quick answer! :-)

I will do all that. Do you know any good online sources for videos
    of swimmers?

    Best regards
    Alex

Check at you local pool(s) if anyone is teaching front crawl there
(chances are high that there is someone). It is much more fun to learn
with others and I would really recommend to learn it with a
    coach/teacher than only by yourself.

http://www.goswim.tv/ is still my favorite (additional to a class, not
standalone). If you need suggestions for books in german, feel free to
    ask.

You should balance your swimming with weight training. It will improve
your swimming and improve your body mass.

In his situation, I wouldn't swim at all, just lift.

While I understand your thinking, swimming is great for the back,
improves depression by raising seratonin levels, and at his size and
weight, he could just be competitive. But he needs to push weights.

Don't worry too much as many people would want to lose weight very much :-)
