  1. it is March, and there is still 2 feet of ice on the lake.

I am wondering, for those of you who swim in lakes, when
do you start to swim in the lake, when it is frozen during
    the winter.

Do you wait till it gets a certain temp? do you wait till
    all the ice is off?

do you wear a swim suit only? or do u have a wetsuit on.

Me, my parents used to say when, and that was late june, if
i was lucky. i am now an adult, and living on my own. i dont
want to do the ol polar bear swim, so i ll wait till i see
no ice, i wont wait till its all gone, but sice the size of
the lake is quite large, if i dont see any, most will be
gone. i wont wear a wetsuit. mind you, i wont be in longer
than 5 mins, otherwise the local ambulance will be called.

    any thoughts

It could take less than 5 minutes for cold shock to give you
a heart attack or make you faint and drown. If you must go
in in extreme temperatures, make sure you have someone
properly equipped on standby as safety backup. I'd wait
until it is up to 12-14c. Otherwise it is so uncomfortable
you'll derive little training benefit anyway.

There was a scientist expert on cold effects on humans on
Letterman that did a 30 minute demo by getting into 32
degree water for 17 minutes in normal winter clothes. His
    information is quite different.

However, if one must swim in cold water it might be a good
idea to stay near shore and start with little distances.
However, if you wear a wetsuit then it is a much different
    situation.

For surfing and a 3/5 wetsuit, I use the 100 degree rule. If
the water + air temps = 100 degrees, I'm in.

I'll fudge into the nineties if the waves are really good.

Yeah, you don't want to go in to 70 degree water if its 31
    degrees out.

3/5? That's interesting. In 50 air and 50 water while
surfing I am hoodless and normally steaming.

You must be surfing Yellowstone. We don't have 70 degree
water in NC if it's 31 degrees out.

    oops...3/2

I don't own a hood, gloves, or booties.

I like blue lips, fingernails, and toes.

  7. Lynne Cox was featured on Letterman's show last year
describing her December, 2002 1 mile swim in 33° water to
Antarctica. She looked rather chubby. This is one time its
not good to be thin. You'd better not swim alone. She just
had a regular speedo on and a hat.

Oh, okay, I didn't realize that everyone in the world was
    in NC. My bad.

    I didn't either.
