  1. HI everyone,

So i decided to enter my first mini triathlon in August, I have about 2
more months to whip myself into shape.

I want to take this opportunity to better my swimming technique
although frankly, swimming is the strongest out of the 3 for me, and I
don't really fancy the run part at all.

Anyways, I'm a fairly good breaststroker, but would love to learn how
to swim the crawl efficiently, that is, without feeling like having a
    heart attack after 50 meters.

Would i better off taking a few private lessons (very expensive, about
$45/30 min) or join a master class and hoping tha the coach will take
pity on me and offer me some tips?

I've never ever heard of, let alone participate in a masters swim class
before. I know they have these sets that you're suppose to follow on
the board. I will NOT be able to do anything but the breaststroke
exercises. I can't go straight on backstroke, and since I'm a sinker
when it comes to freestyle/backstroke, my kicks will quickly turn into
a frog kick to try to keep myself from sinking. Will this be a
    problem?

Wha'ts the purpose of joining a master class if i can't do their
workout? I hate to be a burden on others and slow the entire lane down
or block traffic, should I just take private lessons instead? Please
    advise. Thanks!

Stop, with the defeatist outlook! Rome wasn't built in a day. : )

People who coach (masters), do so because they are teachers.
Sometimes, coaching people who make big early gains can be very
rewarding. There is no need to be shy.

I suspect that, over a period of weeks, you will develop the confidence
to begin integrating freestyle into your workouts - - if only
    intermittently.

As in most sports, tension is the enemy of learning. I just picked up
karate over the winter and I still have to remind myself to breathe and
    relax appropriately.

In the end, I think you will get the most bang from Masters - - just my
opinion; I may be biased here.

    Good Luck,

    rsquared

  3. Thanks rsquared! Congratulations on picking up Karate. I've been
training in taekwondo for a few years and we have some very deep roots
    in Shotokan karate! 🙂

  4. Hi,
No martial arts here. But I joined a Masters class about 15 months ago
    with no previous crawl experience.
All I have to say is: I'm hooked!
No more of that struggling, drowning feeling. Instead I glide and save
an enormous amount of energy for bike&run.
    Definitely worth a try!

  5. I was under the impression that masters class was for experts. One of
the clubs require members to be able to swim 100meters front crawl and
a working knowledge of the others, and i can't quite call myself have
the working knowledge of the butterfly, it kinda scared me away. i'll
definately look for other clubs. 🙂

  6. Okay, I did my first masters class EVER. It was very hard workout,
since I have not swam continuously for an hour on my own for 25 years.
I found out one thing that under pressure, I was able to do 4x100,
extremely slow, but i was able to do it. Freestyle, that is, which I
wasn't able to complete 25 before.

One issue though, the coach was very very nice, but for the entire
hour, he didnt gave me any pointers of what i'm doing wrong, I'm not
sure if it's because i'm new, or there's just way too many people for
    him to do that?

Anyways, I think i'm gonna try to go again, but it really is hard work.
I was not able to complete everything they do. I had to stop and rest
a bit longer, but it was VERY good workout!

Congrats! Stick with it! One suggestion if the coach doesn't appear to have
the time to give you tips during the workout: Approach him/her after the
workout, tell him you're enjoying it and getting a real workout, and ask
for advice on improving your form. He may offer to meet you before or
after, or may ahve some other useful suggestion.

  8. That's a great idea!!!! 🙂

I think I'll stick with it, I never imagine myself swimming so much, it
was amazing, but now I'm so tired. I think i need to go to bed like at
    9. 🙂

    Thanks for all the support!

  10. from a beginner

I learned how to swim just after my 43rd birthday. After 8 months of
taking tips from other swimmers and doing some research on how to do
the crawl on the net, I can safely swim for a triathlon. As insurance,
I listened to other triathletes who advised me to purchase a wetsuit
because it will add a little bouyancy during the race. I will do my
first tri in 4 weeks. I am confident that I will finish. That is my
    goal.

Yay!! You learned how to swim by just reading on the web? That is
really good!! I will continue to work with the master team because it
really pushes me over my limit and i need that push. 🙂

    Good for you! : )

Don't forget, Masters tend to be *swimmer* workouts, not triathlon
workouts. You need to leave enough in your tank to manage running &
cycling, so don't feel as though you are shortchanging the program.

I have done a couple of programs, using the same approach, three
workout choices: A) hard core workout B) the medium intensity C) the
    beginner or low intensity.

Depending on my objectives for the week, I may choose any one of the
three. Maybe this will also work for you(?).
