Where I live in Florida Publix has about half the market but in the
past couple of years both Whole Foods and Wal-Mart have come along so
it'll be interesting to see how things evolve.

Interesting article, thanks for the post. In St. Louis we have TJ's, Whole
Foods, Global Market and the upscale Straubs chain. The Wine and Cheese
shop is another specialty shop I like to visit. I don't know how many
different cheeses they carry but there is a huge assortment. We also have a
couple of farmer's markets that are beginning to carry interesting items. I
kind of think I'm guilty of hitting some of the aforementioned and impulse
shopping 😉

Last November our small-ish town of Winchester, VA opened it's second
SuperCenter Walmart on the edge of town. The lights are much dimmer and it
is a little more up-town looking; but when I went in to look for one thing I
usually buy in the other Walmart store, it was not there. We have a Walmart
about 8 miles away - I don't know who they cater to - most of the item they
don't have this one item. DH just called and said that they did not carry
that one item either. With Walmart, it's always been this way: Go in with
a list of 10 things to buy; maybe I'll get 2. Never fails. The only reason
I ever go to Walmart is for this one item. I wish DH would pay another few
cents and buy it elsewhere, but he'd rather drive me crazy! Tee Hee.

Here, you can't buy produce at Wal Mart which doesn't look like it was
driven over by the truck that delivered it. Two trips are guaranteed, unless
you don't require fruit & vegetables in your diet.

FoodSource and a shopper left FoodSource at 9:13 AM traveling toward
your house at 29 miles an hour... that's as the crow flies, of course...

I live in a nice quiet rural area with an empty 100 acres across the street,
50 acres of nursery behind me, 100 acres of hardwood forest beside that and
then a another 50 acre bush a few hundred acres to the the east of that.
Between the two forests is a 100 acre strawberry and raspberry farm. During
the summer months I have several fruit stands on our block and then there is
a year round produce store a mile and a half from her. I have two butchers
within 2 miles. For grocery stores I have a Sobey's, Commisso's, Food
Basics and Zehrs and an independent grocer with 4 miles.

Don't you have any "normal" grocery stores? A place where you
can go and get pretty much everything (food, paper products, and
cooking supplies) but not necessarily upscale.

Whole Foods is not a general grocery store, IMO. Unless you're
into organic, earth-friendly, 100% post-consumer, recycled toilet
paper. Heck, with those options you list, I'd actually be
*happy* to have a Albertsons, Safeway or Kroger (though I hate
them all).

I guess we have such supermarkets here in San Jose too but I never go to
a chain grocery store. Paper things I buy at Target where they are
cheap. Or Costco. And I do the rest of my shopping at 2 small family
specialty grocery stores, a Whole foods, 2 TJs and the farmers market in
summer. I buy almost nothing canned or processed, try to buy as much
local and organic as I can and like food with taste. All that seems to
be missing at the really dreadful supermakets around here.

Target had pretty cheap hygeine stuff. It's certainly cheaper
than Safeway or Albertsons. Here in TX, the HEB chain is very
competitive on hygeine that there's really no reason to go
anyplace else.

If I didn't have HEB, I probably wouldn't shop at an Albertson's
or Safeway nearly as much as I would here at HEB. In San Jose,
I'd spread my money between Zanatto's, 99 Ranch, the vietnamese
grocer at 3rd and ... Williams?, and Super Mercado, visiting
Safeway or Pak & Save only for main-line stuff once a month.

I guess I forgot how hard it is to find a good grocer outside of
Austin. HEB rocks.
