prevent Anquetil and Hinault from being eclipsed (and given the rather

been part of the race. I'm sure the great ones factor that

of a Basque "fan" running out in the road to give Lance the finger
-- two fingers, actually. Hey, it's only a bicycle race, fella...

It is fascinating to see how psyched up some of these people get,
though. I'm always taken by the ones that seem impelled to run
alongside, as if the sight of the riders awakens in them a primal
urge to participate in the race in some way. Maybe it's the
excitement of the hunt, welling up from long-dormant stone-age
memories. But then, maybe that's what motivates the riders
themselves (after the endorsement fees, of course)...

I don't remember that. I do remember Lance riding too close to the crowd and
snagging his handlebars on a bag some woman was holding.

Not quite. Lance miscalculated and got too close to the spectators. His
fault, not the spectator's.
