The ARX derailleurs came out in 1981, which means they were pre-index, so *any* rear derailleur is compatible with your friction shifters. Newer derailleurs may have narrower cages (for 9 or 10 speed chains), but any 8-speed derailleur should work fine. Thanks for the replies so far -- as a 'best case scenario' I'm hoping that Tom is able to put his hands on a spare ARX derailleur he may have. Thanks again!

I think in 1982 the models were something like this :
Suntour Superbe - best Suntour Cyclone Suntour BL (blue line) Suntour ARX Suntour Vx/VxT/VxGT Suntour Honor or whatever
There are many Cyclone / Superbe derailleurs for sale all the time on Ebay, at affordable prices, like $10 - $20. The ARX really isn't a very great derailleur. I think the MK2 derailleurs (e.g. Cyclone MK2) came out in 1983 or 1984.

Great info! Tom did come up with an old ARX rd and was kind enough to basically let me have it for shipping. Even though this may not have been the crown jewel of Suntour's line, it matches what was broken (as well as the ARX fd), so this was a good replacement option. On a side-note, can I confess to being somewhat surprised at the bids that some of these old parts are fetching??

Really? The same geometry as the higher end models. A bit heavier. Still shifts as well.
It's pretty well recognized that Suntour derailers of the that era were the best shifting on the market, with Shimano in second place. If the "ARX isn't really a very great derailleur", what does that say about a Campy Record/NR/SR?
