It has always been a rule in the channel that you need to change your
name, and talk. Always.

It is kind of eerie to have some stay anonymous and just sit there,
not saying a word. Feels like spying.

Kind of like... lurking? Happens all the time in Usenet. Which
is why I prefer newsgroups - Because I don't feel like being

It's not Usenet. It's chat. And those are the rules of the channel.
And no, you don't have to stay glued to the keyboard. But it is
courteous to change your name, and say something..before going off to
post. If you wanted to post instead of chat, why didn't you wait til
after posting to log into chat?

Granted, it's not normal etiquette for irc, but that's the case in
#rec.food.cooking. Since it's not standard etiquette, it should be
posted somewhere so folks know this weird rule going in. But, it's

Ya know Steve, you are missing the point here... IMNSHO, it's the same
thing as people posting to r.f.c. thru Google groups. People use it
because it's there - via their browser - just like the Java applet.
However, people using Google to post sure seem to annoy the hell out of
you (and a few others).... just as this "anonymous" thing tends to
annoy some of the regulars on the channel. And yet, there are no "rules"
saying that people cannot use Google to post either are there, even if
you think there should be? Get it now?

Now.... if you just had "real" IRC software, (where you can set up your
nick *before* you join a channel) you wouldn't have to use the Java
applet and thereby avoid all this aggravation... And there is plenty of
'free' stuff out there for that very purpose, if you are so inclined to
look for it, which I am sure you know already.

So you're the one! People have tried to talk to you, but you've
remained silent and that is considered bad manners in rfc chat. If
you only want to lurk, it's better to stick with usenet.

Usenet is a passive experience.... you can lurk all you want and
nobody will notice. IRC chat (especially rfc chat) *requires* active
participation at least when you first sign in. Sounds like you don't
have much IRC experience. You would have been permanently banned if
it was a different channel. Ops don't mess around. You play by their
rules or you find a different place to play.

RFC Chat's Standard Operating Proceedure: Sign in, change your nick
from anonymous to something else and say hello. We talk back. It's
called a conversation aka: real time chat. If you know how to use a
phone, surely you can understand the concept.

Part of the invitation used to include instructions about how to
change your nick from antonymous using the web interface. Many people
here thought that was too much information or didn't want to see it at
all, so log in instructions have been streamlined. Personally, I'm
not against giving complete instructions, but rfc is fill with loud
mouths who think they know everything. One of them just got smacked
down and can't take it, so he's gathering his marbles and going home.

A channel can only have one user join as anonymous. If they join but don't
rename the /nick, they are hogging the anonymous nick and preventing other
users who try anonymous, from joining the channel.

Andy's right and rfc chat isn't a scary place except for those who
don't have the conversational skills to keep up with real time chat.
