Moab sucks in Summer, period. It's too hot and stays hot at night because that rock just soaks up heat all day long. Fruita is too hot in Summer, unless you like night riding. Try Durango, Gunnison, Crested Butte, etc. and you can start in Denver. Oh yeah, don't expect to see Vo2lker in Colorado.

There's also that little Idaho get together at the end of July. Now that's a fun place to go in the summer. You could make a three week road trip out of Idaho and CO, and see some of America's wonders on the way, like Yellowstone.

I guess I should read through all the post before I respond to one. I thought you were going soon when I wrote that last one. September may start cooling off, but August will be miserably hot.
Consider the West coast, maybe San Diego. Areas near the coast are usually nice all year. Drive inland a bit, and you'll feel like you've passed through the gates of hell.
Also, places at higher altitudes are nice...again, not sure how much variety all this will provide for you. Too bad you couldn't arrange it later in the fall.

August is great in SW Colorado, but you could see 3 weeks of rain also. Be prepared.

I tried Fruita and GJ two years ago in June. It was 100 degrees and still ridable, but then again, I'm from Phoenix. Early morning and late afternoon weren't bad at all. Grand Mesa was 70 degrees and absolutely beautiful, but remember to take your bug repellant.

We were in Fruita late August last year, was a bit hot, on the other hand in the high Rockies conditions are optimal. There is a write up of our trip here http://www.lowdin.nu/MTB/Colorado/Singletrack.htm. Note that Salida, Frisco, Crested Butte and other places are really at their best in July and August. It would be hard to find a finer ride than the Monarch Crest above Salida.
