Sugar free does not mean low carb. Many sugar free products are
    loaded with carbs.

  3. It depends. Look at the label. I count sugar alcohol carbs according to
what analysis has indicated they digest as which is:
    cal/gram carbs/gram
    Erythritol 0.2 .05
    Isomalt 2.0 .5
    Lactitol 2.0 .5
    Maltitol 2.1-3.0 .525-.75
    Mannitol 1.6 .4
    Polydextrose 1.0 .25
    Sorbitol 2.6 .65
    Xylitol 2.4-3.0 .6-.75

Be warned also that some of these will cause gastric distress, most common
culprit is maltitol and it's often used in SF chocolates. The best tasting
and lowest in actual carbs in my opinion are the ZCarb line,

I'm kinda with JC, here. If you are not happy with your weight, don't try
to find ways of getting around what you have been eating. Go low carb and
    exercise more.

    You can't trick Mother Nature.

Um, I don't get it. What is the correlation between cal/gram and
carbs/gram in that table? How do you apply it to an actual count? For
example, 1 Tbl (15g) erythritol has 3 calories and 15 carbs, all of
which are in the form of sugar alcohol. So how should I count the carbs
    for that 1 Tbl?

Sugar alcohols are listed as carbs on nutrition labels because there is
no other category in which to list them. They do have calories, but
they are not really carbs at all, so there is no need to count them as
such. The best one to use is erythritol, because it does not produce
    gastric distress.

  8. One g of carb equals 4 calories, so I figure that if 1 g of an "ol" yields 2
calories it is equivalent to .5 grams of carb. If one TBL erythritol yields
3 calories, it would be equal to .75 carbs.

  12. And a Happy Holiday to you to Carmen. I'm lucky I don't have a weight problem,
60 years old and 120lbs. I don't know what trolling is, you'll have to explain.
I simply asked the question because I was curious. I'm not up on all this low
carb and just wanted to learn something. My daughter in law is doing Atkins and
she has done wonderfully. I try and have foods she can eat when she comes over
for dinner. Everyone on this site has very good information. There's no need to
    be nasty.
    Sorry

I don't think there are "dumb people" sometimes just ignorant of the facts,
that's why people ask questions. there are no dumb questions, that's how people
    learn.

  15. That post was not from Carmen, it was from JC Der Koenig. The Carmen
attribution was a quote from her, lifted by JC and used in his signature.
You can identify a signature by the fact that it generally appears below
    a -- like this.
