  1. Much as Im loving my LC diet...I find I DO miss a couple of goodies.
Chocolate, for one, bread and icecream.

Dusty taught me that sour dough bread is lower in carbs...and a very
thin slice, every now and then.......YUM!

I have already discovered my perfect ice cream substiturte---a blend of
whipped cream, ricotta cheese and a big splash of daVinci Amaretto
    flovored no-sugar syrup.
Stick in in the freezer for an hour.

my chocolate bar substitute is: melt a few squares of Baker's Chocolate
(has no sweeteners) in a double boiler. add some heavy cream and a big
splash of daVinci syrup, any flavor. I use Praline. Give it the ole
fingetr lick test to see if you want to add Splenda or more syrup. Stir
til the cream is absorbed and pour onto a buttered plate. Put it in the
fridge to harden. a 1 oz. piece is about 10 grams carb---but a half a
piece is enough to satisfy my chocolate "monkey".

The significance of these substitutes is, the ONLY things Ive been
missing are chocolate, icecream and bread. Now....I have a reasonable
carb substitute for each of these usually high carb delights.
When Im jonesing for something 'sweet", these do the trick.

Im especially pleased with my low carb chocolate---It tastes MUCH more
chocolaty than milk chocolate bars, and since it comes in a hard block,
naturally it returns to hardness when cooled. Next time, I'll try using
a wee bit more cream.....and maybe Hazlenut syrup....

I gotta get me some of that daVinci's, they probably have it at World Market
I'd think? They have everything else there...your faux ice cream sounds
    excellent!

For my bread substitute I use sprout bread from the health food store, 4 gm
net and tons of fiber. It's rather pricey at $3.99/loaf but the loaf I
bought lasted me a month because I've found I don't really want bread like I
used to. Still, the occasional tuna sandwich is really tasty! But only one
of the kinds of sprout bread they carry is that low in carbs, all the others
are about double that per slice.

Blaine was making chocolate peanut butter candies on his show yesterday (a
    rerun - they're all reruns now I think) -
    http://fittv.discovery.com/fansites/blaine/recipes/desserts/pbcandies.html
has his recipe if anybody is interested. They looked good to me and the
chocolate part is similar to what you're doing I think.

OK, now I'm hungry...lol. Hubby just went to the kitchen to make us some
steak'n'eggs for breakfast...I told him about your ice cream substitute and
he wants me to make to also 🙂.

the Breyers LC Rocky Road is AWESOME - it's 4g net carbs for 1/2 cup and
    that is a satisfying portion.

I am finding that having a small LC treat helps me from freaking out and
binging too :o) The Atkins Indulge chocolate covered coconut bars are enough
like a Mounds to make me VERY happy too! I also found something called
"Splurge!" (i think...awful name if i am right!) But it has no sugar
alcohols and i like it alot.

I am at a new weight-low and have been having 2-3 of the bars a week or some
of the ice cream. Usually at night, around 10-11 pm. I guess it's not having
a bad effect on me - although it goes against all advice i've ever gotten on
that subject. I figure if they satisfy my sugar-jones and keep me on track
AND I am still losing than I should go with it.

I had problems with binging in the past (while LCing) so "hooray" for me for
staying on plan for almost 5 weeks now!

You don't have to give up any of those...
Chocolate by itself is naturally low carb.

It's the sugar added to it that makes it bad.

You should be able to make your own low carb chocolate treats using
    cocoa powder.

Bread. Yeah, I miss bread too. I usually satisfy that craving by using
    low carb tortillas. ;-)
There are also low carb bake mixes if you want to try making your own.
    They are ok...

Sounds great! I've also recently found some really decent ice cream bars
in the freezer section that have an acceptable carb content as long as I
sacrifice elsewhere on my 25 gram per day limit.

They are VERY good also! My house mate at about 3 per day until the box
was gone at only 6 grams per bar. <lol> I was more than happy to provide
them for him when he goes on an ice cream kick! ;-d

Your trolling commentary is a waste of bandwidth!

There is too little joy in life not to enjoy what you can and the
occasional food treat, if handled properly does more good than harm...

Constant deprivation just adds to the stresses of life.
There is nothing wrong with taking joy in food as long as one takes the
time to learn and be reasonable about it.

We, here, have taken the time and trouble to educate ourselves. There is
NO reason to totally give up treats! One just needs to learn to moderate
    and substitute.

I, for one, will be low carbing for the rest of my life and have learned
to enjoy eating "healthier" for the first time in my life!

I've also lost 40 lbs. since January 4th.

I enjoy cooking and eat more variety now that I've permanently given up
the standard american starch based diet that the food pyramid has shoved
down our throats for the past 30 years or so! Most of my adult life. My
primary diet now consists mostly of fresh meat and a HUGE variety of
fresh green veggies! I've also learned that fat is not evil.

The occasional sweet treat provides a little "joy" now and then.

  15. World Market sells Torani sugar-free syrups....just as good as DaVinci
IMHO. For DaVinci, try Marshall's, TJMaxx and Ross.

  16. I know that my views aren't going to be the most popular, but I'll
share them anyway. First, let me start by saying that I understand that
it's easy to miss stuff like bread, ice cream and chocolate. I believe
that when you search for substitutes, even low carb ones, you are
ultimately sabotaging yourself. Now before people start jumping down my
throat, I repeat, that's just my opinion.

Maybe you are one of the lucky ones who can differentiate between the
low carb version and the high carb version of chocolate or sweets and
maybe your body will only crave the low carb version. Not mine. Give me
sweet treats and I want more. I like the taste. I don't need it. I just
like it. And I don't have the discipline to stop at at a measly 1/2 cup
serving or 2 squares of the low carb version. Nope. After a bad day, or
when I'm tired or lonely or feeling insecure I'll eat all of it. I
wager to say that there are some of you out there in Usenet land who
    will too.

In the years since I reached my goal weught I've learned to separate
mouth hunger from real hunger. When I want something sweet, real sweet,
I make a cup of tea or coffee and pour in some DaVinci. I have almost
every flavor they make. (Netrition is my friend $4.95 for shipping any
sized order......) Or, I brush my teeth with a citrusy toothpaste. I
have found that I don't always need to eat. That demon inside me
doesn't need to be fed every time.

And for those who are thinking I deprive myself, I don't. I have
dessert or treats sometimes. Usually when I'm out-when the portion is
controlled and when I can share it with others.

It's a balancing act. Juggling. And I believe that the way to getting
to goal and staying there is retraining yourself-not substituting a low
carb version of one food for its high carb counterpart.

that when you search for substitutes, even low carb ones, you are
ultimately sabotaging yourself.

As you say, it's a balancing act...... :-)
I've found that both can apply.

Substituting works most of the time for me, but not all the time.
My worst "cheat" is probably Churches fried chicken.
I am NOT going to peel that breading off! It's the best part.

I'll put a craving for that stuff off for weeks, then give in to it and
restrict myself to the 3 piece meal. That lasts for 3 meals too. <lol>
    It freezes well.

I know exactly where you are coming from. The trick is just not to do it
    every day.

I've not had a real pastry now in at least 2 years, but did not get
really "strict" about LC'ing until just this past January when I went to
see a good endocrinologist. No matter how strict I was, it was not
working like it should have. My thyroid levels were still off and I
found out I had really bad IR that needed treating.

Re-doing my thyroid meds and being put on Glucophage (Metformin) along
with Adderall seems to have solved the problem. I have all the "will
power" in the world if the damn plan actually works and I see the scale
go down! If your endocrine system is F-d up enough, even strict LC'ing
won't work well. It's very frustrating.

Carb cravings were not really an issue. I'm a carnivoire at heart!

    Cheers!

Duffy there's no way your opinion can be wrong, opinions aren't right or
wrong, and your experience bears out that what you're saying is true for
you - unpopular or not 🙂.

I can say that when I eat my CarbQuik version of anything bread-y (LC
biscuits or pizza crust - exception being sprout bread), I want more than I
should have. And if I have more than I know I should (ie, 3 biscuits
instead of 1), then I feel logy the next day. I've never had much of a
sweet tooth so I don't have the same experience with the LC chocolate almond
cookies I make, I can eat one and never think about them again. But the
bread-y stuff I have to (a) watch my portions, and (b) exercise
self-control. But it is worth it to me to have these foods occasionally
(once a week or so, for one meal), as long as I only make enough for that
    one meal with no leftovers.

Anyway, I understand what you are saying and can see how substituting can be
    an issue.

Chuckle. I have often been accused of having unpopular
    opinions.

Feeding an addiction makes it stronger. Starving an
addiction makes it weaker. To the extent your desires
are addictive, I agree that avoidance is best.

I'll offer a moderated version that's my opinion:

Generally the earlier you are in your plan the more important
avoidance is. It takes time to learn what you can and can't
get away with. It takes more time to learn what you will
and won't get away with. It takes even more time to learn
what you do and don't want to get away with. But just plain
more months isn't enough, it has to be months learning your
body's reactions and your mind's reactions.

    Check.

Because of my opinions above, my reaction to a newbie asking
about substitutes is different from my reaction to someone a
year in asking about substitutes. Early on I think substitutes
are usually a recipe for disaster, but the later in the less
I think that's true. But the risk never goes away no matter
how far into the plan, it just goes from high risk to lower,
    whatever lower means.
