I have a friend satying with me at the moment. She's a teacher returning to Canada in Mid July to live with her mother and the lease on her flat ran out so I offered her a room for a couple of weeks. Yesterday we went cycling in Kent, Roxanne borrowing a hike, and parked her car in a lay-by on the top of Ide Hill. We had a lovely ride around the North Downs.
On our return, Roxanne couldn't make it up the hill, so I went ahead to pick up her car, loading my bike onto the rack. I drove down the hill to pick Roxanne up. When I got to her I realised that I'd left my bar bag on the ground in the lay-by. When we returned to the lay-by there the bag had gone.
It contained: 1 digital camera 1 pair of sunglasses 1 cheap cable lock and key 1 miscellaneous padlock 1 grotty comb 1 large first aid kit 1 wallet - containing: 3 twenty pond notes 3 credit cards 1 debit card 1 M & S chargecard 1 Nectar card 1 Makro Card 1 Early learning centre discount card a 2 Chinese Mao note a 3 Russian rouble note 2 Cyprus pound notes First and second class stamps
Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!
I've reported it to Sevenoaks Police - but I'm not hopeful of getting the bag and contents back.

Sorry your bag has gone. Do remember to cancel the credit, debit & charge cards *now* if you haven't already done so - or you may find your bank account cleaned out and a shed-load of debt in your name...
I dope hope bag & contents are found & returned to you, though.

Had a call two hours ago. Me, my bag and its contents are together again - including the grotty comb and 3 rouble note.
There was £100 in the wallet - not £60 as I had thought.
Wow - congratulations seem in order! (well, being a cynic, I'd written that bag off as gone for good..... ...sometimes I don't mind being wrong)
🙂
He pulled into the lay-by to receive a phone call. The bag was in his way. Thinking an Ortlieb handlebar bag was a cool bag, containing a beer or two at best he flung it into the footwell of his car. It was only this morning that he remembered it and opened it up. On seeing that it contained valuables he phoned Lloyds Bank, and they called me.
A first rate young man living alone in gorgeous converted stables. Quite a catch for the right chap, I suspect.

Still cancel all the cards. probably not necessary but unless you know and trust the person who brought it back you could find you accounts being tapped at some point in the future.
I left my purse under in the church after a choral rehearsal and got every penny back.
I dropped my wallet with quite a bit of credit cards at a filling station. The attendant took it, and located me using the enclosed ID's (business card). He returned it intact. There was over U$85k in available credit there too using those cards.
The wallet had a bit over U$50 in it. I gave him that as a reward although he clearly wasn't looking for it. He was a very old pensioner living on a small fixed income in a trailer house nearby. The fixed income was why he was working at the filling station (it wasn't sufficient).
I am unsure if I should have done more, but I felt that to do so would have also diluted both of our senses that he'd done a morally good thing based on the morality alone.

Glad you got it back. Although it is easy to fear the worst, more often I beleive that is not the case. Any one of us would have picked it up and looked to return it.
When in San Franciso, I carried my passport around in a shirt pocket rather than leave it in the very dodgy hotel, having explained to my wife the importance of security :-) Returned to the hotel, no passport. Walked the several blocks to the Britsh Consulate where I was met with a "Dr Austin, pleased to see you, here's your passport".
Someone had found it in the park and handed it in, all within the hour!

H!TFD! as they say in Ye Shedde. Once upon a while ago I found a wallet well-stuffed with money at the pub stop on a CTC run. I handed it in to the pub staff, a short while later one of them came looking for me - the owner had asked him to give me twenty of the BRITONS' beer tokens. Which went down nicely...
