What city are you riding in? The legal status of the so called bike path network in Canberra is
multi use. Cyclists, walkers, dog exercisers, roller bladers and others are entitled to use it. You
have the option of being co-operative with other path users and enjoying the experience (except when

adrenalin levels and shortening your life.

Paths can be designated bike paths under the Australian Road Rules by the required signage. When so

I live in nsw where it is iILLEGAL for pedestrians to walk along the cycle way.
They can cross it but thats all.
Roller bladers can use the cycle ways, however.
I did NOT see a section that stated that a cyclist MUST use the cycle way where one is provided.
Could you, perhaps post me a link or direct me to the section whereby this is stated?

Asside from that Cyclists in NSW have all the right to use the road that a car driver has including some rights that other motorists do not have; including the legal right to ride to the left of a line of parked cars.

Digressing a little, as i've just read the ABC Cyclist thread:

Recently someone tried to run me off the road, stating that his logic is that i am legally obliged to keep to the extreme left.
I enquired as to the rules, and discovered that he was wrong.
That i have all the legal right to use the road.
In fact, as a reglar cyclist I have discovered that keeping to the extreme left can sometimes be more dangerous than using the main body of road, and that was the situation i was in during the above incident.
I did not see a section in the rules that stated that I must travel on the left, OR that a motorists is within their legal rights to knock me off the bike deliberately and kill me, or to threaten with menace using his car.
And yet, this is how he behaved, and this is what he indicated to me with his words.
The fact that there are people out there drving, whom act out their misguided thinking that they can knock you off your bike, potentially kill you, without being legally culpable, and who drive like that just because they think they can is very very scary.
Literally; bloody minded.
Not to mention their lack of awarness of the rights of other road users, especially cyclists.

Safe and defensive cycling to everyone.

I generally agree with you. I ride a fair bit aand live in S W Sydney and I also drive a car. I would have to say that [generally] drivers out west are much less "bike aware" than say the city or eastern suburbs. My philosophy is simple...cars are bigger and harder than bikes. They will always win if things go wrong so I always assume that cars around me are not going to do what they should, and allow for thier bad driving habits, and if they do drive in a bike friendly manner it is a bonus. I also try yo communicate with drivers so they know what I am about to do, especially at intersections. I find this helps, and often drivers will give me more room if they know exactly which way I am going.

By the way, have you riden along the L/pool to P/matta cycle way? If so, what to do think of it?

I have often pondered over what an interesting creature the pedestrian is. Why is it that people will drive a car on the left side of the road their entire lives, but as soon as they exit said vehicle they are too damn stupid to walk on the left side of a path to facilitate traffic flow?

I'm considering this as the topic for a thesis.

Which cycle ways are you talking about? The cycle paths that the RTA has laid out are combination
pedestrian/cycle paths.
