Every once in a while my lower back takes me out of cycling for a few dayz ๐ . This time I tried to cycle through it but it only exascerbated it and here I am on a Saturday morn messaging the forum, sittin on a chair vibrator, instead of tearing up the asphalt ๐ . How does a cyclist keep from going absolutely bonkers? To make matters worse, I live on a road where I have to watch them go by heading for the trail  . HELP...maybe a qualude (do they still have them ๐ ?) cyclingPsycho

I think 'ludes are pretty 70's and maybe illegal...what is wrong with your back? Is it an injury or what..?
-
Yup, they're illegal, dude. Least they were bak in my high school days. HNP (herniated nucleai pulpai) lower lumbar. No big deal though, other than work and cycling. Even did Tri's with it for 10 yrs. Spent 7.5 yrs in military with it. Was medic (corpsman) with 1st Marine Division (GO FOX 2/11) so was able to keep it on the low ๐ with crafty manipulation. Mind over matter 2 the pain  . 8 outa 10 people have back problems so I assume their r other cyclists with similar etiology. Anyone?

My Hand is up!!
Every couple of years my lower back goes stiff, then after a few days it starts to hurt...then a week later it goes into a big spasm, at which point I can't walk, so it's off to the Chiropractor and physio thingy and two weeks later it's fine again...I injured a muscle in 91 playing soccer and I've had the prob ever since...lifting heavy things can also bring it on, so I don't lift anything if I can avoid it...
On the other Paw, my wife has had a herniated disc for over a year now, she's tried all the conservative treatments such as Chiro, epidurals etc, she's come to the end of her teather now because the pain/numbness is almost constant, she can't ride her bike for more than 10 miles now without paying for it the rest of the week, so this Thursday she is going in for micro-surgery where they "scrape" away the part of the disc which is causing the problem (sciatic) and we were told there's a 90% success rate...
It's a very very common problem, apparently there's a 6 week recovery, which means you can't bend, twist, lift.... or ride a bike (yes, that was her first question)...
But having gone through excrutiating back pain myself I sympathise with anyone who is going through the same thing...it's something that needs to be paid attention to, pain killers, heated pads etc are OK to relieve the pain but they're not a cure...back pain can ruin your life!!
In my case, Cycling does really help, it strengthens my lower back muscles but of course there are a lot of different kinds of back problems, so it's not for everyone...I guess in some cases cycling can make a back problem worse? I know in my wife's case it does...

I've got some kind of issue with my lower back that is aggravated by laying flat on my back, but I have found it doesn't crop up as much when I keep my back healthy by doing exercises such as deadlifts at the gym.

Okay, before you do anything more 'extreme'. Lie on the floor, on your back. Then arch your back bringing your legs up in a tuck. Try your best to form a semi circle type of shape with your back, particularly pushing the small of your back 'out' and rolling back and forth on the floor, as you form the arch.I often get lower back pains and it usually happens because of posture letting your back form an 's' and the small of your back pushing inward. If you try to correct that, and stregthen your back muscles at the same time the pains usually stay away. But, if you are really tall then back pains are just part of the gig really. It's always a battle to have no back pains at all, if you are tall.
Yoga is good too, but with limited spare time, I'd prefer to ride my bike than do yoga.
