I would say Hossein, even though his sport is more about power than raw
strength. The fact he is approaching 600 lbs in the C&J with what most
experts consider technique flaws is telling. Shane Hamman considers him
the strongest man, and Shane is an ex-powerlifter who has squatted over
1,000 lbs.

I disagree completely. Strongman is about strength/endurance and the
events are deliberately chosen to favour very large people. If you are
talking pure strength you would be better looking at powerlifting. But
the reality is that Hossein squats almost as much high-bar ATTG as the
best powerlifters squat low-bar, wide stance to parallel using support
suits and wraps.

Kaz would certainly be in the picture, but because of what he did as a
powerlifter, not as as a strongman.

I only partially agree here. Yes, strongman events tend to favor
strength-endurance over pure power. But I would argue that picking up
an Atlas stone is a better test of pure strength than anything that
involves a nicely knurled barbell. And some of the more recent
strongman events seem to be gravitating back a bit more toward
power-centric events with less emphasis on grip and endurance.

Oops, posted too soon. Following up on Keith's point, yes the
*winners* of Strongman events need a lot of strength endurance, not
just pure power. But still some strongmen have an awful lot of power.
I might actually argue for Glen Ross being the strongest man in the
world - his endurance is subpar so he'll never win WSM, but in the
power-centric events he often dominates even with rather poor form.
