The reason chainstays and seat stays on traditional steel bicycles
have such small cross sections is that they support only tension and
compression and to bending or torsion as the three larger frame tubes
do. Using a larger cross section in the "rear-triangle" is fashion
and bushwa.

If we look at a snap shot of colnago history we see a pattern.

1. Colnago Bi-titanio = two downtubes (claim increased laternal
rigidity) -> expensive and discontinued

2. Colnago HP-stays (claim increased lateral rigidity) -> expensive and
likely soon to be replaced by this newest hype in "lateral rigidity"

3. Colnago leaf shaped seat stays (claim increased lateral rigitidy)

Do other bike lack lateral rigidity in comparison to these? The 2002
Colnago C40 didn't have all this "lateral rigidity" and is regarded by
many as one of the best bikes ever... My suggestion... if you own one
of these awsome C40s don't cash it in for increased lateral rigidity.
