    Stretching Out Does Not Prevent Soreness After Exercise

    Science Daily — Studies show that stretching before or after exercise
    has little or no effect on muscle soreness between half a day and three
    days later, a team of Cochrane Researchers has found.

    Many people stretch before starting to exercise, and some stretch again
    at the end of a period of exertion. The aim may be to prevent injury, to
    promote higher performance, or to limit the chances of feeling stiff in
    the days after the exercise.

    Two researchers set out to assess whether stretching could reduce
    stiffness. They identified 10 relevant trials, each of which involved
    between 10 and 30 people. Nine of the studies had been carried out in
    laboratory situations and stretching varied from between 40 seconds and
    10 minutes.

    The researchers used a 100-point scale to assess stiffness after
    exercise. They concluded that the estimated effects of stretching were
    extremely small, with most estimates showing that stretching reduced
    soreness by less than 1 point on the 100-point scale. The size of the
    effect was similar if stretching was performed before or after activity.

    "The data were remarkably consistent," says lead researcher Robert
    Herbert from the School of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney,
    Australia, "The available evidence suggests that stretching before or
    after exercise does not prevent muscle soreness in young healthy adults."

    The researchers do, however, believe that there is a need to see whether
    stretching can have an effect on people in the community who have
    reduced levels of flexibility.

  2. I find that active recovery does help reduce soreness. Typically, that
    means the day after and for a much reduced intensity and duration.

    Does 'active recovery' mean something like exercise or stretching on the
    next day?

    I have found that movement through soreness is a great help, for
    exercise induced pain as well as those other pains of aging such as low
    back pain or touches of 'arthritis' in the hands.

    I wonder if any of these things need scientific explanations or if the
    explanations could (or have) lead to better patient care.

    Exercise of the same type, but not stretching. For example, if I do a ride
    with lots of climbing on Saturday, I can have sore quads over the next
    couple of days if I do nothing the next day. But if I instead do some light
    riding on a stationary bike or do some easy riding the next day, the
    soreness will be much, much less.

    Same with weight lifting. If I get charged and do too much in the gym, then
    some light work the next day on the same exercise helps a lot.

    I have an arthritic back and stretching does help there. But that soreness
    isn't exercise induced. I think the arthritis makes my back less flexible
    and the stretching helps bring it back. I find that stretching after
    getting sore from exercise doesn't help much at all.

    I do like stretching for the purpose of keeping flexibility.

    I think the active recovery thing I mentioned is already out there. I got
    the notion from somewhere....I didn't invent it. 🙂

    stretching is to improve the flexibility of muscle, which is believed
    to help prevent injuries during exercise.

    The idea is that muscle which becomes more flexible may have a
    decreased tendency to become micro-injured by eccentric contractions.
    E.g. if your quadriceps muscles are flexible, you will probably be
    able to handle fast downhill running better, with less soreness.

    Flexibility from regular stretching takes time to develop. A study
    which studies the effects of stretching needs to take at least that
    long in order to produce any meaningful results.

    The real questions are: do people who stretch regulary do become more
    flexible, and to what extent; and: how much better off they are in
    terms of injuries, soreness and performance in sport.

    The commonly held belief in sports circles is that stretching does
    improve flexibility and that flexibility does have these benefits.

    It takes time for the flexibility to develop from regular stretching.

    It's not the stretching itself which prevents soreness.

    What I do is a ride of about 35 miles one day and then swim the next day.
    Swimming really relaxes your muscles and, as such, is a great complement
    exercise to cycling.

    I'd agree. That is how stretching was always explained to me - as an
    injury preventative, not a soreness preventative. And I believe there
    is supporting data for that, at least at the extreme end. I believe
    that when American Football teams started regular flexability training
    the average number of injuries dropped significantly. Whether this is
    as important for the typical "weekend athletes" (who also rarely get
    their limbs forcibly twisted into unusual positions) is another
    matter.

    What is the benefit of stretching before lifting? IME, the best thing to do
    before lifting is a set or two at much ligther weight than you plan to do
    your "real" set at. This gets your muscles ready for the exact motion they
    are about to perform...and, you do stretch those muscles with the light
    sets, too. Doing some other "stretch" might put you at odds with the lift
    you plan to do.

    You guys ever watch cats and dogs stretch? I wonder why they don't get all
    complicated with stretching as we tend to? Could a big brain be a
    disadvantage?

    Absolutely, we see patterns where none exist. We almost compulsively
    find patterns in randomness.

    I had a doctor who advised me not to stretch before exercise but to always
    stretch afterwards to prevent soreness. go figure.
