  1. I've discovered, in times of great stress, I crave the foods I loved most as
a child. Homemade chicken noodle soup, ribs and chicken with dressing, and
chocolate cream pie...stuff like that. Yesterday, at 7 pm, I made a
chocolate cream pie. What does that tell you?

My eldest brother, a shy, quiet man who is just about the nicest person on
earth, was diagnosed 2 months ago with hypertrophic myocardiopathy. He'd had
a mild heart condition all his life due to being a preemie, so this had a
major effect. Eventually, he will likely need a heart transplant. He is the
second of my brothers to be diagnosed with this condition, which (from what
I understand) is a thickening of the heart muscles that causes difficulties
keeping the blood oxygenated. Anyway, we've all been very worried, yes. But
he'd had a pacemaker/defibrillator put in his chest, and they said that
would help, and keep him from needing surgery for a while.
We became cautiously optimistic. Ate more salad, you know. Then yesterday
morning my sister called me. Donnie had gone in for more tests over the last
few weeks because he was feeling excessively weak and fatigued and having
problems with his eyes. After several rounds of testing, he was diagnosed
yesterday with Myasthenia Gravis. Hence, the chocolate cream pie. And the
tomato bisque for dinner. Today, chicken soup with grandma's homemade
noodles and tapioca pudding. Ok, and a piece of chocolate. Or two.

What do you eat when you're stressed/worried/sad?

I usually *can't* eat when I'm worried because my stomach starts boiling and
bubbling the minute I get upset. Food just adds fuel to the ever-increasing
activity. If I'm under a lot of stress, I'll go a full week without
touching any food. When I feel I can return to food, I want bread or pasta.
I guess I go back to my comfort foods, too. :~)

Good luck with your brother's condition. Please keep us posted.

Kimberley, I'm so sorry about your brother's diagnosis. I would be
stressed/worried/sad, too. My thought are with your family.

I eat anything I can get my hands on when I'm stressed. I've been
    porking out all week.

I have that urge too, to skip eating altogether...but if I don't eat, I end
up having a hypo (low blood sugar) and that feels worse and scares my
    family, so I eat.

Kimberly, I'm so sorry for you and your family in your brother getting this

Homemade pie, you name the kind. Homemade chicken-fried steak, mashed
potatoes, and peas. Chicken and dumplings.

Creamy foods. Ice cream, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, cheesecake.
After all, we crave the comfort of our mothers' breast during stressful
times, and breast milk is creamy and sweet. Since we're too old to
nurse, the natural reaction is to go to these foods for solace.
