  1. Over the last week or two, at least, I've been getting what IMO seems
very odd behaviour from the streetmap.co.uk site. For example, the
Home page has chunks of strange stuff on ("Action Canceled" at top,
and on right, etc). And URLs that used to work now either give Page
not Found, or (after a re-route) give a zoomed out map instead of the
more detailed one I was expecting.

Anyone else found similar quirks please?

If you are looking for 1:50k mapping you have to ask for it directly
from the page by clicking the zoom or including a day number in the
URL. This is a means of reducing the number of OS tiles downloaded
from Streetmap's servers since they now pay a fee based on the number
of downloads rather than flat rate as before. It's been like this for
ages, since just after Streetgrabber [1] was let out.

Confusingly they still say you can link to an OS 1:50k page with a
    link of the form:

    http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=552331&Y=185355&A=Y&Z=3

But it no longer links direct. It goes instead via a re-direct to the
    Bartholomew's.

The "action cancelled" bit is where the server for the ads has tripped
    up.

Several times in the last month I've searched by placename and been
presented with a single blank tile surrounded by the navigation arrows. I've
had to zoom out to get a real map!

I have carried out a surprising number of searches recently where
Streetmap doesn't have any record of the places I want whereas I found
them alright with Multimap. I used to be a great fan of Streetmap but am
going off it, although I still prefer Streetmap's OS 1:50,000 tiles to
    Multimap's.

I also used to be a great fan of streetmap but find myself using
Multimap most of the time now. It is a shame that the streetmap service
    has deteriorated.

Yep, it seems that multimap.com is a better bet at the moment.
Streetmap hasn't been working properly for ages, blast it.
