  1. (x-posted: aus.bicycle, rec.bicycles.misc)

I've written about this before but it happened again and it was worse than previous occasions so I'm
    posting about it again.

From last weekend: Sat: Solo 52k on new mtb singlespeed (32/15 gearing = hard) Sun: Solo 100k on
roadbike except fast Beach Rd. bit in middle swapping turns with someone in Fitzroy Cycles kit into
strong headwind. Really pushed hard at the end too, to get under 4hrs. (hard) Mon: 26k each way
commute on singlespeed (hard) Tue: 26k x 2 commute on 'normal' mtb after nearly losing manhood on
toptube after throwing the chain on singlespeed! (easy?) Wed: 26k in-bound on normal mtb at easy
    pace, no problems...

On the way home wed night though, about 15 minutes and 5k's into the ride I was feeling totally
light-headed and dizzy. My body felt strange and "light" also. Not fatigued like "I've done 100k and
now my legs feel like lead" fatigued, it was a strange 'lack of energy' all over body weakness. It
felt like I was going to fall asleep and I was in the granny ring doing, like 15kph or something!
Now, if you know me, you'll know that I don't stop during rides, basically ever. In three years
commuting I would have stopped a ride maybe 10 times due to punctures or meeting somone I knew and
chatting. You'd also know that there is no way in hell I'd ever pay the over inflated service
station prices for anything... Well, I was so weak, I had to sit down on the footpath for 10mins! To
get going again, I bought some chocolate from a servo.. now that's totally against normal behaviour
for me, but like I said, my body had this strange wash of numbness over it and I just couldn't go on
without doing something about it - like resting and eating. Now, you might be thinking "oh, well you
bonked" and I would think the same thing, but I've done a long ride with no food before and know
what that bonk was like for me - "I don't want to continue, someone just come and drive me home!"
and then I eat and wait and i'm all good again. This was different with the whole light-headedness
and I still wanted to ride, just couldn't. Also, I'd eaten stacks that day! I was scoffing those new
Milo breakfast cereal flakes straight from the box all afternoon! (I am a freak when it comes to
food consumption though.. no wonder I'm a fatty!). Anyway after the rest and the snack I felt a bit
better and ended up riding home, in a reasonable time minus the stop.

So, I know I've asked this before and I'll probably get similar answers (lack of food, etc) but are
there any other possibilities? How much does lack of sleep effect your performance over time? How
much sleep do most people get anyway? We are supposed to get 8-10 hours a day but does anyone even
    get near that?!

Thanks for any suggestions! hippy ( not the ganja smoking, acid munching variety either! ;-) )

  2. Here is a suggestion you will not like. At least I wouldn't like considering this.

I know 2 cyclists who develped diabetes, both were a bit overweight but not egregiously so.

Given the peculiar symptoms, it sure sounds like a blood suger problem to me, but then again I am no
expert. I am just a bit sensitized to the idea because 2 of my cycling buddies developed it - so I
realized that *gasp*, it could happen to me! You might think of getting this looked into - then
    again you might not.

  3. When was the last time you checked your blood pressure at the doctors... i dont know if you were
being sarcastic when you called yourself a fatty. but how fat are you really. i assume not that fat
because you are riding so much.

I might also ask not lack of food. but what types of food have you eaten. out of the normal day to
day stuff that you eat without getting this effect on your body.

how much water did you drink that day ? dehydration can hit you like that. light headedness
dizzyness. even neaseas. have a look..try some self diagnosis. analysis..im only generalising im
only 20 years old and never passed a year of high school.. but dont rule these symptoms out. could
be dangerous to your health long term, could be something major. or something not so major like the
    above mentioned. good luck

Ooh, that was something I didn't think about at all. I know I was drinking water during the day but
it wasn't as much as usual and I only drank half a bottle on the ride in when I often finish a whole
one. I was also drinking iced coffee which does seem to have a slight diuretic effect on _me_.

  5. (Top-posted to get attention)

    Hippy

I'll second Mitch - visit the doctor ASAP,

I was a very keen Audax rider building up to attempt the Paris-Brest in 99. In late 98 I completed a
solo 400Km ride in 26 hours on $500 Giant hybrid Early 99 I did the 200K Alpine classic, on an MTB.
I weighed 100kg, (182cm) the lightest I had been for 10 years. and was the fittest I could ever
    rememember being.

By mid 99 though riding a better custom-fitted road bike, I started to find myself dropping of the
back of the peloton on a 300K Audax ride in the

Strathbogies. Not quite light headed but definately no energy despite eating & drinking properly. I
never consulted my doctor about the lack of energy I just assumed wasn't training properly because
of winter and it would pick up in spring.

I started filing to complete more & more winter Audax rides.

By Cup Day 99 I was in hospital following a severe angina attack.

Before the year was out, I had an angiogram showing 3 blockages of 80% 60% and 40% to arteries
around my heart and was admitted for heart surgery.

This mightn't be you but PLEASE go to your health provider and explain all your symptoms.

    Best of health, Pete

Don't go by BMI. That is absurd, since the weight recommendations are linear with respect to height.

  7. I don't disagree with anything said. However this is a good place to get advice about bottom
brackets, training etc. In your case you have a health problem and you need to get yourself to a
doctor and have a blood test.

The reason Men live ten years less than Women is partly because we get health advice from our
    "mates" rather than a doctor.

Get your medicare card and get on your bike!

  8. I know that sinking weak feeling all to well there are several possible causes

    1. Over training , regardless of how fit you are you need to give your self at least one day a week
off or your body will rebel.

    2. Human vitality and energy is not linear you may be able to do a thousand klms in a week in one
part of the year and not be able to get out of bed in another , get your self a biorythm
calculator they can be very handy

    3. You may be developing chronic fatigue ( hyopoglycimea low blood sugar ) and if you are do
something about it NOW look at your eating habits if you eat a lot of "energy foods" with a lot
of refined sugar you are in real danger of getting into a viscious circle of blood sugar
fluctuations. Which won't kill you they will just make you wish you were dead trust me I just had
all my teeth out because of this condition.

    4. You may be alergic to something you are eating and it is finally begging to catch up with you

Get checked out for what's going around at the moment, you know: SARS, AIDS, Hep C, ebola, etc. etc.

    Fat [censored]!

    Regards,

    Tim (193cm, 108kg, >10% body fat, borderline overweight/obese)

    From nih,gov:

BMI is a reliable indicator of total body fat, which is related to the risk of disease and death.
The score is valid for both men and women but it does have some limits. The limits are:

a.. It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
b.. It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass.

SEE YOUR DOCTOR. talk to someone whose job it is to look at the symptoms, order the correct tests,
    and make a diagnosis.

SEE YOUR DOCTOR. DO *NOT* PUT IT OFF, DO *NOT* WAIT. DO IT NOW.

I've written about this before but it happened again and it was worse than previous occasions so
    I'm posting about it again.

From last weekend: Sat: Solo 52k on new mtb singlespeed (32/15 gearing = hard) Sun: Solo 100k on
roadbike except fast Beach Rd. bit in middle swapping turns with someone in Fitzroy Cycles kit
into strong headwind. Really pushed hard at the end too, to get under 4hrs. (hard) Mon: 26k each
way commute on singlespeed (hard) Tue: 26k x 2 commute on 'normal' mtb after nearly losing manhood
on toptube after throwing the chain on singlespeed! (easy?) Wed: 26k in-bound on normal mtb at
    easy pace, no problems...

On the way home wed night though, about 15 minutes and 5k's into the ride I was feeling totally
light-headed and dizzy. My body felt strange and "light" also. Not fatigued like "I've done 100k
and now my legs feel like lead" fatigued, it was a strange 'lack of energy' all over body
weakness. It felt like I was going to fall asleep and I was in the granny ring doing, like 15kph
or something! Now, if you know me, you'll know that I don't stop during rides, basically ever. In
three years commuting I would have stopped a ride maybe 10 times due to punctures or meeting
somone I knew and chatting. You'd also know that there is no way in hell I'd ever pay the over
inflated service station prices for anything... Well, I was so weak, I had to sit down on the
footpath for 10mins! To get going again, I bought some chocolate from a servo.. now that's totally
against normal behaviour for me, but like I said, my body had this strange wash of numbness over
it and I just couldn't go on without doing something about it - like resting and eating. Now, you
might be thinking "oh, well you bonked" and I would think the same thing, but I've done a long
ride with no food before and know what that bonk was like for me - "I don't want to continue,
someone just come and drive me home!" and then I eat and wait and i'm all good again. This was
different with the whole light-headedness and I still wanted to ride, just couldn't. Also, I'd
eaten stacks that day! I was scoffing those new Milo breakfast cereal flakes straight from the box
all afternoon! (I am a freak when it comes to food consumption though.. no wonder I'm a fatty!).
Anyway after the rest and the snack I felt a bit better and ended up riding home, in a reasonable
    time minus the stop.

So, I know I've asked this before and I'll probably get similar answers (lack of food, etc) but
are there any other possibilities? How much does lack of sleep effect your performance over time?
How much sleep do most people get anyway? We are supposed to get 8-10 hours a day but does anyone
    even get near that?!

Thanks for any suggestions! hippy ( not the ganja smoking, acid munching variety either! ;-) )

Hi Hippy -- your symptoms as described sounds very familiar to me. I am a diabetic and you really need to see a doctor ASAP. Please don't "wait and see". You had this happen before and 5km and 15 mins probably isn't enough to give you low blood sugar, particularly where you'd been eating carbs that day. Sustained high blood sugar is as exhausting (actually moreso) than low glucose levels.

That's what the doc suggested it might've been. I do eat lots of high sugar foods so maybe I need to

I'll second Mitch - visit the doctor ASAP,

I visited the doc and he said it was probably hypoglyceamia (sp?) due to eating too much high-sugar
foods beforehand and then suffering a sugar "crash". I'm going to get some blood tests done anyway.

Oh dear, that is a surefire way to experience big blood sugar fluctuations. You need to eat more low
glycemic index foods (esp complex carbs) to regulate your blood sugar levels so they are consistent
without peaking and troughing. High glycemic stuff is OK while you are training/racing or
    immediately after.

Chronic Fatigue is not the same as hypoglycimea.
