For a few weeks now my mtb had been making a strange creaking sound. It only happened when pedalling. I suspected it was a loose bottom bracket or pedal bearing. I swapped the pedals with a mates and the creaking still occurred. Off to the LBS where I bought the bike, brand new, less than 3 weeks ago. The mechanic agreed it was probably the bottom bracket and said he'd have it back the next day. Anyway, 3 days later I get it back. Of course it didn't make a sound in the store but as soon as I got it home the creaking started again! Back to the LBS and after a heated exchange I left with the creaking bike in hand vowing never to return....
I begrudgingly took it out today and hit some fire trails. The creaking sound got the better of me so I headed for home. Just for a change I thought I'd ride home along the road. When I got to the Princess Hwy I raised the seat post a couple of inches. (It just feels better to be sitting higher whilst on the road.....not to mention is much easier!) Anyway, once I'd raised the seat post that annoying creaking sound had disappeared! Unbelievable...The bike is as quiet as a mouse now...A lesson learned.

Common trap. We often assume that a noise when pedalling is coming from some part of the driveline. Your case highlights the fact that this is often not the case. My common one, but easily recognised now, is a loose bar clamp on the stem. It's easier to identify because it only seems to happen when really levering on the bars - of course it doesn't sound like it's coming from the bars.. inconsiderate stems! ;-) Now off you go to buy lots of stuff from your LBS... ;-)

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I thought the creaking was coming from the bottom bracket... got the BB replaced, but creaking was still there as loud as ever. What was really happening was that it was coming from seat, and probably being carried by the seat post & tube which made it sound like it was originating from the vicinity of BB. I had lowered my seat to give a more upright posture after I got back on the MTB following a major shoulder injury. I didn't realise the source of the squeak until I felt comfortable enough with the shoulder to raise the seat again, and magically the noise disappeared 🙂
Get this noise all the time from the pygmy road bike, ie: it's still running cottered cranks. creakcreakcreak, plus ocassionally a strange mushy sound. Um, Bob, are you still running cottered cranks on your bike? Are you that old?😄
