  1. After the nice LBS guy sold me my bike I told him 'treat me like a guy
who has been out of biking for a while and tell me stuff like how to
take off the wheels and soforth'

He was a nice guy but oddly he didn't have a standard go-through, and
no check list or anything. Performance, though a different kind of
shop, at least had this and did a defaullt go through with mechanic
(at my store anyway), and description of things.

Anyway, at the time I had not paid a lot of attention to shrader
valvestems. He didn't volunteer 'if you haven't ridden in a while you
might want to get a pump'.

So I went back and asked him to show me the shrader valves and to show
how to pump up. He had a nice floor pump an showed me how to open the
flange, put it on and lock into position. I practiced this a couple
times. "So sell me a pump". He goes over and picks one up - the most
expensive one on the floor I come to find out and since I get a
discount it was not that bad.

I get out the pump for the first time and it's some kind of weird
explosive module with a chain and not at all like the two headed model
    with the flange.

<shakes head> How much more specific do you have to get. He sells me
one type and we practice and I now recall him mutter 'don't have to
guess which head to put on', and then sells me one that's completely
foreign. I put it on and the thing won't pump up. The cylinder must be
missing the valve flap or something. It's connected and I can get like
2 lbs of air per 10 strokes and manage with sweating to get the
    pressure up to 100.

Then I go to try and disconnect and I slide this gold barrel back and
the freakin head explodes off the end and I fall over in the garage
and hurt my wrist. THere's no instructions in the fancy plastic
shopping bag. I just threw it in the car and to my discredit, I didn't
unpack it and take the valve out of the separate bubble wrap at the
    shop.

Can anyone send a pointer to this type of head. It's gold and the
tube goes in the end of this cylinder and there's a sliding sleeve and
a sliver chain connectnig them so it's oviously meant to blow off or
    something.

How do you connect it. Do you part the pieces and fit the gold
cylinder over the valve and -then- plug the tube end into it?

How to disconnect. Is it supposed to explode off?

    TIA

After another look, it appears the goldhousing is fitted snugly on the
valve stem after unscrewing the top of the stem of course. Then the
sleeve is pulled down and the male end adapter is pushed and guided by
the larger housing makes a perfectly aligned docking over the end of
the presta valve - then you release the sleeve locking this in.

It then appears that you have to use both hands to take the gizmo off
the valve. First hold the tubing end, then push the sleeve down on the
barrel. This blows the tube end out with a 'pop', and there's a rather
heavy chain link chain holding the housing and the barrel end (female)
with a 1" slack - maybe so it could blow out and be restrained if you
    used the one hand method?

    Anyway, arrgh! ;-p

I just gotta say, this CRACKED ME UP a few hours ago when I read it! (And
again just now, too 🙂 )

Hope someone can answer your questions, but thanks for letting me know I'm
not the ONLY one who does stuff like this.

  6. You got a pump with a presta adaptor.

That fitting is for presta valves, which have the screw-top, and are thinner
    than the schrader valve.

just make sure to unscrew the top of hte valve before inflation, and tighten
it back down after. This insure you don't go flat. Just take the entire
pump end, both peices, off at once when done. Now, if you wnat, you can get
a schrader adaptor for presta valves, but you still have to do the screw cap
when done...and leaving hte adaptors on isn't exactly the best hting to do
    😉

The reason schrader is more common is schrader is self-sealing, while presta
relises on that screw-valve. The advantage of presta is that it's thinner,
and thus better for use on thin road rims, where the larger hole for
schrader would possible weaken the rim.

I'm the guy who puts stuff together and when done you realize there's
a piece that needs to go in second and you're holding the final build
parts and have to totally disassemble it to put that part in. Then you
put it back together and discover a small note at the bottom "Put part
in so the small marking dot is facing upwards" - you have to open it
back up to check and find you put the part in upside down. D'oh. %-D

I think I"ve got it figured out after extensive consultations with
    experts on-site.

    the wadding then the shot?

You too? No matter what I put together I have to do it at least three
times. It's fortunate that we did not meet and mate and spawn.

Right. As I corrected myself. THe thing is the type of adaptor that
you use for most pumps involves a lever which is snapped up and then
down. This has a whole different adaptor, in two parts, connected by a
chain to the pump tubing and male end. I had never seen one like that
    before.

I know about the presta valve and unscrewing the screw top first. But
    thanks for the posting. ;-)
