  1. I see there was a discussion about this last year: I'm wondering what the
    update is.

Does anyone know where I can get straddle cables for Weinmann style
centrepull brakes? I need some for a 1970s Viscount aerospace (viscount
    branded brakes)....

A really old fashioned LBS might have them (you know the sort, where the
bloke wears a brown overall coat!) - BUT I have improvised with a short
length of MTB cable, using the barrel at one end and using a bolt with a
hole and nut at the other end (the sort of bolt that retains the cable end
on an old-fashioned side pull brake) I have also seen straddle cables in a
shop in France - may have been Decathlon or possibly Go Sport.

I have an old set of Weinmann centre pull brakes that I no longer need
and was thinking of flogging on ebay. You can buy them off me for a
fiver+postage if the cable is worth that much to you.

  4. Thanks guys. I've heard of the pinch-bolt solution, but don't know if I can
    find teeny enuff pinch bolts.

I've been told on rec.bicycles.tech (another fine ng) that some motorcycle
repairers can make barrel ended cables. I may check this out and get a few
    made!

Thanks for the Weinmann offer DaveK - I may get back to you!

  5. Beware that these Weinmann cables come in two lengths.

  6. OK ... I've heard 110mm, which looks about right (and is also the length
for Dia Compe). What's the other length?

(NB that these aren't actually Weinmann brakes.)

  9. Thanks again for advice everyone - I have now obtained a handful of
variously sized straddle cables from friends who recycle bikes (shameless
plug: lets hear it for the excellent Cyclemagic in Leicester,
    www.cyclemagic.org.uk)

Oddly, the Viscount brakes do not quite take Weinmann nipples, which are
about 1mm too thick. A little judicious drilling and filing was necessary.
    All fine now.

Also oddly, the cables I removed were longer, and had globular nipples (!!).
Looked like long thin dumbells. What could they be?

Possible alternative to tracking down Weinmanns: Shimano cantilever cables
(the sort where you require two to make up the whole straddle) are almost
exactly the size and shape of the Weinmanns, and may be easier to find.
Also, an old-style LBS said; "we can always make some for you" 'You can??' I
replied incredulously. 'Of course we can' they replied. So worth trying.

And thanks those who warned me - I am VERY aware of the Viscount fork
problems: on this bike, the forks have been replaced.

    best wishes
    Nick Jones
