On the way to work this morning (started out spitting rain, ended up pissing down) I went past a guy near the hospital on Clarendon St.....He was riding a mountain bike and having a hard time of it as he had no seat or seatpost. He did have a U-Lock on the handlebars but I am guessing that he wished he spent a bit extra and got one of those thin seat cables that you can get.
I feel sorry for the guy and I was wondering how common this is?? I am lucky enough to have secure parking at work so I don't even own a U-Lock but I am considering getting one for that one-off time that I have to park the bikes somewhere. I know there was some talk about a certain brand being able to be opened with a pen case so what brand is worth getting??

Returning to your bike to find it saddleless would be pretty damned frustrating. When I think about it, it makes sense to steal a seat, you only need an allen key, but I've been lucky so far.
Maybe the beehive under the saddle (from the other thread) is an anti-theft device.

i have lloked at so many parked/locked-up ikes and wondering if the seat/wheel/pedals would go walkies...

My Amsterdam Cuzz reckons 40,000 bikes get stolen annually there...

Before even the current bic pen craze Kryptonite had some locks that werent affected by the bug. They used a different type of lock. Any lock by any brand that uses that round barrel type is potentially susceptible to the exploit.
There is some german brand with an a, and other kryptonite locks that use a "disc type" key, and they're not affected by the problem.
Id currently warn against buying even a fixed kryptonite, the skanks were supposed to have issued replacement locks in october, then nov, then dec, then jan at the latest for people affected by the issue but as yet havent fulfilled a single aus replacement lock, and dont answer emails about it anymore. Their distro in aus is cassons australia, and they're in NSW.

A friend of mine told me a few weeks ago how he as impressed at Kryptonite's service. He sent away whatever form there was and I think they sent a voucher or something so he could go to a shop and get a new lock.

aaaah, you need some of those removeable flipless QR skewer thingys that comes with a custom key/lever thingy so you can just flip the QR or allenbolt to take off wheel, seat, etc

!! True, but depending on the area, I'd expect this sort of thing to be normally done by the opportunist, or just bored kids. Having an allen key suggests to me they have actually gone out their way to look for and steal something specific.

I have to agree, it's more likely top be kids or drunkards (esp in Sth Melb, where there is lots of pubs). If they were fair dunkum they'd take the bike. I often see speedos on bikes and wonder how they don;t get nicked as well.

Ive just had my 2nd bike stolen here in the space of about 7 months. Only seems to bother Dutch people coz its a big inconvience when you have somewhere to go and no bike. My girlfriend actually had the key to her back wheel clamp like lock taken after she left it on there. That was a pain in the [censored]. It is to be expected here but still leave´s me [censored]. I wont ever get used to people stealing like that no matter how [censored] the bike. I suspect the junkies on the 1st floor. One of them actually did not realise or remember i live in the same building and had been trying to sell me a stolen bike when i saw him in another city all together.

A friend in aus? I originally registered two locks in sept, two in nov, and no reply from kryptonite yet. The aus distro cassons said that kryptonite claim to be handling US replacements, and then perhaps other countries afterwards.

Rubber fatigues/perishes. The council aren't gonna want to cough up for new rubber covers all the time just to protect our paintjobs. Nice thought though.. not that I ever lock my bike up.. 😉

Just carry some of that foam padding they use on BMX bikes and slip it on whatever part of the frame touches the rack
