Stock up on 9-Speed?

I doubt it'll be a big problem any time soon. 8-speed parts are still
widely available, and 6- and 7-speed part are easy to find if you know
where to look.

Bloody- I've yet to "upgrade" my 8-speed bike to 9-speed. It'll
probably happen when I next replace the chain.

Right now 9spd is really cheap... so I don't think there is a big
hurry. I'd guess that any potential scarcity is a couple of years off.
I just sold a Dura Ace crank for $30, and am buying some new SRAM
cassettes for $20-$25 each. I'd like to see some chains for $10 each
like the last batch I bought, but those days might be over. If the 9spd
stuff ever gets expensive, then I figure that will be a good time to
"upgrade" to 10spd.

If you are using Octalink, maybe get a couple of those BB if you see
them on sale.

Depends what parts you're looking for. You'll be able to find chains
and cassettes and derailleurs that work on 9-speed for years or maybe
decades. It'll be very hard to find new top-end integrated shifters,
but you probably will be able to find lower-end models for years.

Good summary. For instance, you can still get new 7-speed STI shifters
from places like Harris. But they're Sora, not Ultegra.

cases, if you have enough money to keep your equipment up to those
quality levels, you have enough money to upgrade to current specs (i.e.

Money isn't the issue, standardization makes things simpler. My kids all
race track, mountain, cross, and a little bit of road. Keeping all of the
bikes running is a constant battle and break downs at the race can ruin a
weekend if I don't have the right spare parts.

Having one 10-speed bike would be a total pain so I don't think we will
upgrade until I see a clear benefit and then will probably switch everything
at once.

The only thing '9s', that is not compatible with '10s' is chains and
cogsets...What will change is fewer high end 9s cogsets, like DA,
ultegra, etc...but '9s' will be around for a while with shimano since
the low end stuff is still '9s', like Tiagra...
