Well, my wife noticed that a particular [censored] of mine that was getting a lot of taekwondo workouts smelled even when it was fresh out out of the washing machine. So, remembering Steve's advice in the thread to use antibacterial soap, I put in the sink with Dial antibacterial hand soap and water and let it soak overnight. Then she washed it in the machine with the rest of the laundry, and it came out smelling brand new.

Something else that seems to work is *freezing* the clothes for a few days. My son came back from Canada with a severe pong on some of the stuff he took on trail... tried a couple of things, but freezing worked.
